director, died Monday evening
at her home.
Stephenson, 41, was on leave
from the University since late
September when she was
diagnosed with liver cancer,
said Rae Goldsmith, Media
Relations director.
A memorial service is
schedviled for 2 p.m. Thursday
at the First United Methodist
Church, 400 S. Main St. Visitation for family and friends is 7
to 10 p.m. today at Stephenson's home, 212 Cedar St.
Stephenson, a Detroit native,
was a cheerful person who had
a positive outlook on life, Goldsmith said, adding she knew
Stephenson for about two
years.
"We've been friends. I saw
her about a week ago (Monday)
and, as always, her attitudes
and spirits were just
wonderful," she said. "She had
a very good outlook on life and
a strong faith."

Student's apartment roof takes flight
during weekend's rain, wind storm
by CRYSTAL HARMON
LIFE Editor
When Karolyn Wilkey left for work Sunday afternoon, she left a
comfortable but modest apartment behind.
When she returned Sunday evening, her home had a skylight, a
shower in the living room and an indoor wading pool.
The storm that raged through mid-Michigan at about 7:30 p.m.
July 7 tore the living room roof off Wilkey's apartment, located on
the third floor of the A building of The Forum, 950 Appian Way.
Wilkey's neighbor, Rick Domingo, witnessed the de-roofing.
"I had just gotten out of the shower," said Domingo, Virginia
senior. "My friend said he saw the roof lift up a little, but I didn't
believe him. Then I saw the windows buckle, and I said 'It's gonna
go.'
"Then a big gust of wind came and picked the roof right up. It
was like slow motion. All the bricks (composing the stairwell wall)
went down, too."
Domingo said a small portion of his bedroom roof was blown off
along with the roof over Wilkey's living room, and that "water was
pouring in like a faucet."
After "stuffing a bunch of towels and clothes" to soak up the
leakage, he went to check on Wilkey, Webberville junior.
Since his knocking went unanswered, Domingo consulted with
the manager, obtained a key and opened Wilkey's apartment, he
said.
Domingo said he and five others braved the downpour and
torrential winds to salvage the belongings in Wilkey's apartment.
"We just started grabbing stuff — stereo equipment, the TV,
anything — and moving it into the back bedroom," Domingo said.
In about 20 minutes, they had cleared the room.
Then Wilkey came home.

automobile accident
by BRIAN D. BELL
LIFE News Editor
A CMU student killed July 2
in an automobile accident near
Barryton is remembered as
someone who liked to have fun
and who was always willing to
help others.
Amy Brett Wood, Barryton
freshman, was killed at
approximately 9:40 p.m. when
her compact car collided
head-on with a van driven by
William Kvintus, of Shepherd,
said Henry Wayer, Mecosta
County sheriff.
Wood, 18, was traveling
south on M 66 near Arthur
Road about 5 miles south of
Barryton when the collision
happened, Wayer said. She was
returning to Mount Pleasant
after working a shift at a
Barryton restaurant.
At the time of the accident,
Amy's parents, Stephen and
Cathleen Wood, were attending
a school board meeting at
ChippewTa Hills High School,
about one mile south of the
collision site.
They were notified by phone
of what happened and arrived

editor in Media Relations'
Publications Office, Goldsmith
said.
She became assistant
director of Media Relations'
News Bureau in 1984 and
eventually was promoted to
associate director. Stephenson's title was later changed to
director of the News Bureau.
Stephenson was an active
person within the University
and the community.
"She gave a lot to the University," Goldsmith said. "She was
involved with so many people
in so many ways here.
"She was just a gifted person.
She had the gift of wisdom and
witt and grace."
Stephenson was involved in
organizations including the
United Methodist Church, the
Council for the Advancement
and Support of Education and
Art Reach of Mid-Michigan,
Goldsmith said.
Susan Repp, assistant vice
president for Student Affairs,
said working with Stephenson
on several occasions allowed
her to realize what a caring
person Stephenson was.

CMU's tuition rates for
1991-'92, the cost of on-campus^

graduation fee are three items
on the agenda for Thursday

meeting.
At the 11 a.m. meeting in the
Board Room of Bovee University Center, committees of the
Board will meet to discuss
action considerations at
Friday's meeting, scheduled to
