Central Dispatch working out bugs;
still beneficial during its first week
Hugs - just about everyone
hates them.
The bugs hindering Isabella
County's Central Dispatch
system, however, aren't the kind
that fly .swatters can eliminate.
These bugs are associated
with computers and the malfunctions that often go along with
new ones
Nevertheless. Central
Dispatch Director Dick Heltinck
said the computer malfunctions
within the new system — which
began operating for city agencies
Thursday at the Mount Pleasant
Department of Public Safety-
building. 804 E. High St. — are
minor and expected.
"Wo had some difficulties with
the console on audio levels and
the amount <>! voice that wa-
coming in." Heltinck -.ml. "Hut
we got that straightened out
Saturday morning."
He explained obstacles are
expected whenever a system of
tin- magnitude Is implemented.
At the same time, the new
dispatch system - which
includes three new radio console
computers — has demonstrated
its u.-efulnes.s. Heltinck said.
"It helped i Saturday! night."
he said "We had Id officers out
in the city with all the party
traffic."
He explained the system —
when fully implemented
Monday. Nov. 6 — will unite the
dispatch systems at Mount
Pleasant City Police and Fire,
Isabella County Sheriffs Department and Michigan State Police,
Mount Pleas.mt Post.
All three systems together will
provide Isabella County with a
loiisolnlated central dispatch
Heltinck added that before
Thursday there was only one
computer console and dispatch
operator working. Now it is
easier to coordinate police activities
Implementing city police to
Central Dispatch is an imtal
step to the entire process of
consolidating emergency
services under one roof, he said.
"We're just in step one of a
ten-step process," Heltinck said.
"I'm very pleased how things
have l>een so far."
