Central's
housing has
high safety
standards
by MATTHEW BACH
A major fire on Mackinac
Island this summer has caused
university officials throughout
tlie state to think twice about
fire- safety standards in
residence halls.
CMU officials, however, say
they have always enforced high
Tire safety standards.
The death of two people in a
fire on Mackinac Island Sept. 9
in.-pircd Attorney General Frank
-J. Kelley to conduct a thorough
inspection of all Mackinac Island
buildings that house more than
three people, said Marion
Gorton, a spokeswoman in
Kclley's ofl'ice
Alter tlu- Mackinac Island
m.-pection — which revealed
several code violations - Kelley
made a hrief statement that
other dormitories and residence
halls around the stale probably
havc similar violations, she said
"Whenever you have a tragedy
it always c.ni.-cs sou to take
notice, ami that sometimes is the
one meager heiu-fil in a tragedy,"
(iorton said
CMU tifficals. however,
already conduct thorough
insj-H-i'tions This is one reason
the University has not had a
fatal fire in many years. Jerry
Baker, coordinator of the safety
program for the Department ot
Puhhc Safety, said.
"We are very conscious when it
comes to safety, especially fire
safety." Baker said. "We have an
excellent fire safety record "
Violations found on Mackinac
Island included ohstructed
emergency exits, lack of fire
extinguishers, lack of batteries
in lire alarms and inadequate or
improper exit sign-
Baker said he and several
other people inspect every pull-
station alarm, every fire extinguisher and every fire exit on
campus in the summer and
winter.
During the inpections Baker
checks to see if all fire extinguishers aire fully charged, if all
exit signs are lit and if the
appropriate fire extinguisher are
in the appropriated location, he-
said.
Ixsfls that students put up in
the residence halls require
further precautions, said
Housing Director Gary CiafTone.
"If they have a lofl in their
room they must have a smoke
detector somewhere in their
suite." CiafTone said, adding
detectors are provided for
.students by the University.
