Trustees vote to raise

Due to insufficient funding from the state, the price of an
education at CMU will go up In-ginning this full
In its May 7 meeting, the Hoard of Trustees moved to raise
undergraduate in-state tuition from $52 to $-r>4 r>0 per credit hour,
and registration fees from $25 to $80.
The tuition hike will commence August 22.
President Arthur Ellis said the hike is due to a "lack of money
from the state" and all money from tuition will go into the general
ongoing budget. He added the raise is not the result of any particular University expense.
"It*s just that the state budget is very tight." Kllis said "If we give

CMU's tuition increase
may appear deceiving
by KIM FOULKES
i Iff- News e-J:or
Although the newest tuition rates are a considerably unpleasant thought for CMU students, ever increasing rates are a common
occu ranee.
And upon close examination to tuition rates at other Michigan
schools, the cost of education at CMU is competitive.
True, this year's hike that includes a $2.50 increase per credit
and a jump of $55 for registration, is higher than usual. Hut
according to President Arthur Kllis. that is only to lie expected.
"Tuition will always go up at the rate of inflation." he said.
"People will always expect students to pay their part of the inflationary cost."
Only a decade ago. according to the 1978-79 bulletin, a CMU
undergraduate who was a Michigan resident paid only the rate of
$26 for each credit hour. Graduate students paid $.'15
The next year tuition for that same undergraduate's tuition was
listed at $:il .50 per credit hour and a graduate student paid $42.50.
In 1981-82 school year undergraduate rates rose $5 to$;jfi 5(1 and
graduate student rates were raised to $7.50 to $49OO
Hy the 198.1-84 school year, tuition had reached $47 for undergraduates and $(>.'!.50 for graduate students
And that's where it stayed until tfie fall of 1987.
The stagnation in the annual tuition increase came after tfie
>tate of Michigan ordered a freeze on rates
That lull might have seemed nice to the students who paid their
bills during those years, but that period is "part of the problem"
that caused large jump for the 1988-89 academic year according to
Kllis.
"Then- was three years where the stale asked us to freeze our
tuition and mo>t people in hindsight see that wa> a mistake." Kills

"I think if you look at other schools, the tuition is no higher or no
