exhibition game at Rose
by GREG MELVIN
LIFE Sports Editor
For those who thought they would never
get to see Dan Majerle play a another game In
Rose Arena — think again.
The Phoenix Suns, who drafted Majerle in
the Bret round of this year's NBA draft, wul
play a pre-season exhibition game against the
Denver Nuggets in Rose Arena on October 15
at 7:30 p.m.
Barry Ringel, Phoenix Suns media relations
director, aaid the Suns ball dub tries to play
exhibition games at some of their draft picks
home schools. Ringel said the team has played
at University of Nevada-Las Vegas when they
drafted Armon Gilliam, and there is a sche
duled game at Tucson, Arizona where recent
draft choice Steve Kerr played.
"If it ties in and the school permits it, well
do it,* Ringel said. "We've done it and it's been
real sucessful. It's a homecoming for the players. I hope there is a good crowd and reception
for .Dan and the rest of the Suns."
"They contacted us about playing here,"
Athletic Director Dave Keilitz said. "There
will be an awful a lot of people that will enjoy
the game."
"That's a good move to have a pro exhibition
game on campus." said Charlie Coles, CMU

Fall semester registration fees refunded
by MARK LaROSA
Llff Editor
Students who preregistered for fall semester classes received an
unexpected windfall from Accounts Receivable last week in the
form of a $25 check. The check returns to students the registration
fee paid last spring.
Jane Johnson. Accounts Receivable manager, said the University refunded the registration fee and will attach an 'enrollment
fee" onto students' tuition bills, which she said were mailed out last
week.
The Board of Trustees approved a plan May 7 to do away with the
$25 registration fee and to incorporate the new enrollment fee as
part of the tuition hike.
The enrollment fee is $80 per semester for students with six or
more credit hours and $40 for those with less than six hours.
Johnson said students will no longer pay money at preregistra-

Inner-party races aided by excellent voter turnout
by MARGARET WOLFGANG
Llf E Stall Wr.ler
Isabella County's August 2
primary yielded a 25.16 percent
voter-turnout rate — a considerably higher figure than
usual in a primary race.
Isabella County Clerk Betty
Prout said it was "more than
we've had in a primary in quite
a while."
A contributing factor to the
elevated turnout was interest
generated by the appearance of
two inner-party races in particular — probate judge and
sheriff — plus the county commissioner's contest on 1988's
primary' ticket that Prout said
voters are not always offered.
The result was what Prout
called a "good primary for us
(Isabella Countyi."
These added attractions,
which were expected to draw
more ofthe eligible 29,800 registered voters in Isabella County
to the polls, did just that as
7.499 participated in the primary races.

Budget to be cut by $200,000
by MARK LaROSA
LIFE Edtor
CMU's budget will have to go on a $200,000
diet this year, but one official said it is not time to
start tightening our belts yet.
The cuts will be made because the amount of
money expected from the state on the budget and
what was actually appropriated to CMU differed.
The Board ofTrustees July 15 approved CMU's
1988-89 general fund budget at just over $100
million, an 8.4 percent increase over last year.
Through appropriations, CMU is to receive
about $50 million from the state — a 5.46 percent
increase over last year. In the budget a 6.1 percent increase was expected, said Dick Miller,
governmental assistant to the president.
The conference committee report for higher
education appropriations was approved by both
houses Thursday, Miller said.
Ed Grant, vice president for administrative
affairs, said there are always changes' required
on the budget and this year's will be figured out
as the year progresses and more information on
