GTE workers strike nears no
end, both sides won't budge
by MARK LaROSA
The tiTK workers strike is
still going strung, and one ofTicial
says then- is no end in sight
unless members of th*' International Brotherhood of F.lectrical
Workers n-consider their position.
"The strike is status quo. we
an- now completing the third
week with no change." s.ud l-ow-
cll Kinney, state director of
Public Relations for GTE North.
Michigan operations
He said there has boon little
communication lietween management and the union workers,
who went on strike Aug 17.
He said union memlx-rs sent a
letter to Max Preston, (iTF. vice
president for General Management, saying they would be willing to negotiate if management
improved their offer.
"We responded hy saying our
offer is on the table, there is no
room for improvement," Kinney
said.
Incidents of vandalism to telephone lines, which Kinney Raid
have been at astronomical rates,
have affected people in more
wavs than one
Hob Wheeler, assistant vice
president of Chemical Hank. PMi.S
S Mission St., said when the long
distance lines go down, so do the
automatic teller machines
He said the machines were
down Fnd.iy when long distance
lines were out because the
machines cannot access account
information over its network.
Kinney said there have been
10,1 incidents of vandalism in the
past three weeks, aa opposed to
the usual 24 per year, but added
the frequency is reducing.
