University Park may get first tenant soon
BY KRIS HAHN
LIFE News Editor
Without formal Board of Trustees action or
discussion, and without official announcement. City
Commissioners passed a resolution of inducement
Monday to hire a new University Park tenant to
Mount Pleasant.
After approximately two years of searching for
prospective University Park tenants, both in the
United States and abroad, and after finding and
losing prospective tenants, the Middle Michigan
Development Corporation has contacted a company
that wants to lease land in the Park.
CME International Corporation, the potential
University Park tenant, is registered in Delaware or

State funding for CMU.
though not as good as it could
have been, is a lot better than
many people hoped.
The Michigan Senate and
House of Representatives
passed a $1.1 billion Higher
Education bill which appropriates the bulk of $50.2 million to
CMU. in three bills.
The three bills, which would
allocate money to CMU, represent a 10.2 percent increase in
state funding if Gov. James
Blanchard signs the bill.
The bills have not reached
the Governor's Office yet.
Blanchard has 14 days to sign
the bill after it reaches his
office before it is assumed a
veto.
Richard Miller, executive-
assistant for governmental
relations, said he expects the
bill to he signed soon.
Earlier in the legislative
process, the Senate passed its
version of the Higher Education bill with a 13.7 percent
increase.
In a December interview.
President Arthur Ellis said he
expected between a 5 and 6
percent increase for 1987-88.
The increase would be a step
in the right direction for the
University, Ellis said.
"It's a significant increase in
our base appropriation," he
said.
In a press release issued
Wednesday. Ellis stated the
University's requests have
been fairly considered.
The legislature has been
very good to Central Michigan
University this year," Ellis
stated.

MMDC Executive Director George Dunn said the
inducement resolution is "the first step after application to allow a company to issue tax-exempt bonds to
help fund the project."

Rising insurance costs have
put the crunch on Michigan's
state-supported colleges and
universities, so many ore

costs low.
President Arthur Ellis
decided the University will
participate in the 11-member
Michigan Higher Education
Risk-Sharing Facility. He was

determine the University's
participation in the group.
Business Services Director

start paying off in the next
three to five years, he said.
"It's an investment in the
future more than it is an

Although costs have not been

Trustee thanks legislature for funding
BY BRYAN LAVIOLETTE

One CMU Trustee says he would like to say
two things to the state legislature after they
passed the Higher Education bill.
Trustee William Odykirk said he, as an
alumnus, former professor, administrator and
now a Trustee of CMU, can thank the legislature for being fair.
"I think I can represent all of those constituencies by saying thank you, thank you, thank
you." Odykirk said.
But. Odvkirk added he has other words for
the legislature as well.
"It is about time that people from the various
legislative districts from across the state
recognized our needs," Odykirk said.
The 10.2 percent increase passed by both the
state House of Representatives and Senate, will
be a tremendous boost for Central, Odykirk
said.
"Now we need to put two or three of these
years back to back," Odykirk said.
Odykirk said the $50.2 million allocated to
CMU is more money than was expected, hut still
may not be enough.
