Non-unionists petitionrftif FA decertification
BY KATHY PETERSEN
Llf E Assistant Heats. Editor
Non-union faculty members
are seeking to eliminate CMlTs
present faculty union — but
they do not expect to be
successful.
Three faculty member* are
circulating a petition calling for
a faculty-wide election that
could decertify CMlTs Faculty
Aaaociation.
"Is there a patron saint of
lost causes?" said David B.
Schock, assistant professor of
broadcast and cinematic arts.
Schock said he and biology
professors James Gillingham
and Raymond Hampton had
collected between 50 and 60
faculty signatures by Tuesday"
and need about 180 by Friday.
Schock said he objects to
service fees tor non,-union
members and the hacking of
political candidate*. And the
three faculty m-jnbers have
included their own suggestion
for replacement on the petition
— a local ' body called

To call for a decertification
vote, 30 percent of the
bargaining unit, which includes
union and non-union members,
must sign petitions.
R. William Dunham,
associate vice provost for
Faculty Contractual Relations,
said the bargaining .unit
consists of between 570 and 580
people.
The petitions must bo filed
before the contract's "window
period" is over — setting the
deadline for March 30, but
Schock said he wants to
complete the petition by
Friday.
Window periods occur at the
end of each contract. — and
after the window period closes,
the union cannot be decertified.
John PfeifTer, FA bar-gaining
unit -chairman, said he does not
expect the union will try to
combat the petition by
increasing education about
union services.
The FA, as a matter of
course, communicates with its
members. That's routine,"
English professor PfeifTer said.
Repeated attempts to contact
FA President Edward
McKenna, professor of
sociology, anthropology and
social work, on Tuesday were
not successful.
Hampton also said he was
