SGA rallies support
against service fees
by PAT BRAY
LIFE Staff Writer
Student Government Association members
brought their concern about the increase in special
fees for college and universtiy students to Gov.
James Blanchard Friday.
The board distributed a press release at a
Michigan Collegiate Coalition award ceremony for
the governor which called his tuition freeze
"woefully inadaquate" because of the increase of
student fees and the addition of new fees at many
Michigan colleges and universities
The MCC presented the governor with a plaque
for his support of higher education at Michigan
State University Friday afternoon
Tim Burke. S<iA student concerns director, said
the press release accomplished two important
objectives
"One, is it s.mi tins 'the MCfi is an ograru/ation
we are going to stay active in. even though we
di-agree with them on this one* h*ui* It also sent a
message to Blanchard that we art* not going to let it
<the feesi be swept under the rug." Burke, Mount
Pleasant junior, said
Burke said SGA will be study where funding for
schools comes from and will work for a more
equitable system.
SGA Administrative Assistant Robert Jansen said
the governor did not choose any CMU representatives in the short question and answer session
following the presentation
"The general feeling was he ducked our
questions," Jansen. Mount Clemens senior, said lie
added the question the lioard wanted to ask i« if the
governor would support an acros-the -hoard freere
on special fee increases
Jansen added the Ixiard did not want to "take
away from Gov Blanchard; we didn't trv to
overshadow the award
District Five Representative Laura Winiecki
attended the award ceremony with nine other ('Ml'
students and said she believed other -ch<*ols -hand

Temporary faculty
may be unionized
by TOM WICKILAM
LIFE News Editor
L'niomration of CMlTs temporary faculty will take a preliminary
step today when F*acn_lty Association President Joyce Henricks
meets with them to discuss proposal prospect*.
A letter sent to CMU's temporary faculty early last week outlined
the prospects of jenning the FA bargaining unit and re-quested
faculty submit their concerns about the proposal. Today's meeting
between Henncks and temporary faculty is viewed as a preliminary
step to official action through the state to unionize the temporaries.
Henricks said
If an election to unionise the temporaries is conducted it probably
will not occur until lS^-MS. she added
"I assume Monday's meeting is informative . see if we want to
indude them in the bargaining unit." Henncks said "I'm basically
thinking in terms of getting the preliminary stuff done. If they don't
(want tn join the FA> . . drop the issue "
Between l.r>0 and 2iX> faculty are classified as temporaries, she
said. Because they mt: non-tenured they lack pnitection, such as a
grievance procedure and benefits
"Temporaries have been on a one-year contract; it's very easy to
cut back on .staff"." Henricks said
Interim President Arthur Ellis said he was unaware of the
movement to unionize the temporaries and would not comment on
the issue.
