New phones arrive
by ROGER HITTS
Workers began placing new phones in
some campus buildings Tuesday, and
the University's new, state-of-the-art
phone system should be operational by
July 16.
Telecommunications Director Ken
Johnson said the switchover to the new
phone system — which is University
owned—will begin at 5 p.m. on July 13.
The system will offer distinct advantages for student and administrator
alike, Johnson said.
For faculty/administrative phones,
the system offers the options of call forwarding, reducing long distance numbers to a few digits, and being able to
handle two calls on a single line phone
Conference calling for .up to 30 people
will also be available, Johnson said.
The real breakthrough for the students will come via the ability to direct
dial long distance calls in the residence
halls.
As the University owns the system,
Accounts Receivable will bill the students for long distance calls with their
regular room and board payments,
Johnson said.
If students choose to have the ability
to dial long distance calls direct, they
may apply for an authorization code,
Johnson said.
The University will have the ability to
register the calls, and will be able to
issue billing statements similar to
GTE's.
"Prior to getting the University bill,
we will send students a statement that
says 'these are your long distance calls
for this date at this time, you talked for
this many minutes and it costs this
much money,"' Johnson said.
All local service charges will be built
into the room and board rate, as previously bandied, he added.
The system, called the "Northern
Telecom SL100 Electronic Digital
Switching System," is the first in the
world to include all the latest innovations, and will give the University voice/
data abilities which formerly only
phone companies could accomplish,
Johnson said.

ICTC is threatened
by CHARLES DAVENPORT
UFE Staff Writer
Unless voters in the
upcoming primary elections choose to renew the
7/10 of a mill required to
keep the Isabella County
Transportation Commission in operation, the
system may have to
close down or drastically
reduce its services.
The millage costs the
average taxpayer $10 a
year and constitutes
$300,000 in operating
costs. Up to 16 percent of
ICTC funds come from
fares.
Mike Mobey, general
manager of ICTC, said
the system also receives
nearly $500,000 in state
and federal assistance.
If the millage is not re
newed, the county would
lose that money.
"You vote against the
millage and you can kiss
goodbye to about a half
million dollars in state
and federal dollars,"
Mobey said. "If it isn't
passed we'd have to at
least double the rates
and cut our services in
half."

Seger faces committee
by RICH ROBINSON
UFE Editor
Martha Seger, appointed to the Federal Reserve Board by President Reagan
will go in front of the Senate Banking
Committee again Thursday for more
questioning.
Seger, professor of finance at CMU,
was asked last week to submit a list of
written answers to the committee regarding her stand on fiscal policy, a
committee aide said.
"The committee will probably vote on
her appointment on Thursday," said the
aide, who wished not to be named. The
exact content of the committee ques-
tionaire was not known, the aide said.
The request by the committee is in
contrast to earlier Administration anticipation that Seger, a Republican, would
be approved with little problem. Reagan
nominated her April 30.
