New phones
wreak havoc
by ROGER HITTS
LIFE Managing Editor and
SHERRYYAEK
UFE News Editor
Two days after the switchover to the new University
phone system was completed, workers have found
reaching out and touching
someone can be as difficult
as making a silk purse out of
a sow's ear.
Problems in completing
long distance calls, transferring calls and adapting to the
two-digit code formula are
some of the complaints cited
by receptionists since the
hook-up went through Monday morning.
Repair manager Tom
Short said the major technical problems have been with
the features the phone system carry.
The problems are caused
in the software within the
system, and as the CMU system is the first one of its kind
with its own specially writen
software system, problems
can be expected. Short said.
"Anytime you write a software system you are going
to get bugs," he said.
Short added there is a software engineer on campus
working towards solving the
problems.

Plant building halts
by WES CONRAD
LIFE Staff Writer
Construction of Central's
woodchip plant has come to
a standstill due to labor complications between contractors and local union officials.
Both union and non-union
workers arc honoring building trade local 1098's "informational picket", which has
been set on West Campus
Drive since last Monday.
The Saginaw local is protesting the use of non-union
workers in the construction
of the plant, specifically.
McNeilly Contracting, a
Farwell based firm who presently holds the contract for
the plant's concrete foundation.
Hob Pilarski stressed that
it was an "informational
picket" and that the union
members were in no way
preventing workers from
entering the work site.
"We're simply trying to
inform the public that
McNeilly will not enter into
an agreement with local
1098."
Pilarski said the local
would stay on the picket
line, "as long as we have to."
Pilarski regretted that
neither McNeilly nor the
University had contacted
him concerning the picket
and he hoped that something
could be worked out.
Edwin McNeilly said he
had not yet been contacted
by the local concerning the
strike, but maintained he
had no intention of joining
the union. McNeilly said he
felt any negotiating or delays should be dealt with by
the general contractor
under whom he was subcontracted, in this case JR.
Heinemen and Sons of Saginaw. McNeilly said he has

the story," Newson said.
Newson said she did not
get a chance to talk with
Deibel. but bis secretary
made it clear of his opinion about different
groups being deputized.
"His secretary told me
his views and said 1 could
argue, but that wasn't
going to get me anywhere," Newson said.
"She said he says it would
cause confusion with the
various districts and prin-
cincts. I talked with some
other individuals, who got
the same thing from his
office."
Deibel said there are a
