FA, Administration conflict on tenure policy

"Supporting in principle." but not its present
state, the proposal tn lengthen the probationary
period for facultv tenure, the Facultv Association
Hoard of I)irectnrs s.-vs it is ready to negotiate
with the Administration on the issue.
However, in a letter sent bv President Harold
Abel to Academic Seriate Chairman David
Maclciad Abel states the Administration con
siders FA's reply a rejection of proposed pmha
tion extension policy.
Under the Senate Policy on the Process of In
stituting Change in Peappointment. Promotion
and Tenure Policy - which enabled the Senate to
says it agrees "in principle" with extending pro
balion.try period for tenure, outlining, however,
five areas of concern to he addressed belore the
FA would suppot the proposal.
"We want il (the proposal) to preserve tin
tiignitv of our contract, and comply with the

Abel added in the letter, the Trustees will fur

response at its March meeting.

The policy, which enables the Senate to deal
with matters of reappointment, promotion and
tenure, was passed by t he Senate in April of 19SO.
The Senate poluv also states ihe FA and the
Trusties must act on any policy within 90 davs
alter t he Senate passes it.
