Board requested to ban Soc class
byROBISELER
LIFE Managing Editor
A human sexuality class taught at CMU should bt- banned from
the University curriculum according to two Mount Pleasant area
residents who addressed the Hoard of Trustees at its meeting Fri
day.
Floyd Seiter. a retired biology teacher from Rosebush and Gladys
Mitchell, of Mount Pleasant, told the Hoard they did not want their
tax dollars supporting a pornographic and obscene class.
"If they are not pornographic. I don't know what is." said Seiter of
several supposed "lniii:osrx»;il" illustrations he referred to in a
former textbook. 'Our Sexuality." which was written by Robert
("rooks and Karl.i Hauer. used for the class a year ago.
The courses being .piestioiied by Seiter and Mitchell are SOC 213:
and HKC 213: "Introduction to Human Sexuality." identical courses
taught in two departments.
"I'd like to see the subject dropped from the curriculum," Seiter
said, adding it is courses such as t hese "w hich .ire ruining the lives
of people in the state and country."
Both Seiter and Mitchell are members uf the Citi/cn's for Decency
Through Law and said they were at Friday's meeting as concerned
taxpayers.
Seiter said Mitchell received a letter from a Central student,
whom she refused to identify, who allegedly had the course at CMU
and was appalled at its content. He added the student had signed up
for HKC 211: "Marriage and Familv Perspectives." but was instead
placed in HKC 213.
"(Homosexuality) to be teaching i!. that's what bothers me," Mit
chell said.

"Sodomy is against the law in Michigan and right now they
(homosexuals! have a serious disease. 1 Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome! and the taxpayers are paying for it." she saiil.
John Petras, professor of sociology, anthropology and social
work, who teaches the course said Sunday there are no illustrations
in the text depicting homosexuals engaging in sexual activity.
He said the illustrations pointed out by Seiter as being homo-sex
ual in nature only involve heterosexual activity.
Petras, who is an expert witness used by courts in obscenity
cases, said the text book does not meet the definition of obscenity.
"I don't think there is ativ question the textbook could ever be
considered obscene in a court of law ." he said.
