A SEASON OF GIVING
Local charities working to make holidays cheerful
By Brent Wehner
LIFE Slaff Writer
For most people, the approaching holiday season signifies some great holiday dinners and presents under the tree on Christmas Day.
For the less fortunate, large dinners and many
presents simply are not affordable.
Some local charity organizations are aiming to
make this holiday season a cheerful one for everybody. The Red Cross and Salvation Army are gearing up for their annual holiday campaigns.

The holiday season is here once again and it is
time to shop the for those perfect gifts.
In the midst of the search for the perfect gift, area
stores are stocking up on those hot items for that
special someone.

^7tt^:trPenney Co.: 2231 S MTssiori St.;the big
sellers for the season are almost any type of clothing
with a Christmas motif, said Janet Johnson, senior
merchandise manager.
"We have a lot of Christmas sweaters," she said.
"Sweaters are always popular."
Johnson said she feels women's jogging suits will
be a bi2 item along with the always-popular basics
such as socks and underwear.
"Those are really good stocking stuffers."
The talking Barney doll is expected to be a really
big-selling toy, according to Craig Wilsey, assistant
manager of the Wal-Mart, 4208 Blue Grass Rd.
He said the talking Barney has the best computer
chip for voice reproduction.
Other expected high-selling items are Power
Wheals, televisions, videocassette recorders, camcorders, leather jackets, blenders and microwaves,
Wilsiy said.
"Anything in our housewares department sells
well."
Increases are expected during the store s three-
day blitz, the Friday, Saturday and Sunday after
Christmas.

Athough the Isabella County Chapter of Red
Cross, 402 S. University Ave., is in the process of
moving, it is not stopping the organization from
participating in this holiday season.
"We give three-day food supplies to anyone in the
county," said Judy Davis, administrative assistant
to the Red Cross. The food comes mainly from donations and the recipients must be referred by another
organization in the county such as a church, she
said.
The Red Cross hopes that everyone can have a
happy holiday season, and it tries to help the less
fortunate out however it can, she said. Davis also
noted the Red Cross does get more food donations
around the holidays.
"People tend to think about it more," she said.
The Salvation Army also gives out food baskets
for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
"The baskets entail mostly canned goods that
could be used to prepare a nice dinner," said Sue

Central students' gift desires run the gamut
I Ihir Staff Reports
Although Christmas is the
time of giving, some CMU students also like receiving.
The Christmas wishes range
from the practical to the sentimental.
Heather Jenkins, Williamston
freshman, said she is wishing for
some new clothes. Barb Toney,
Romeo senior, is asking for a Red
Wings jacket.
Claudia Willerer, Saline freshman, said she hopes to get tickets
for a Red Wings game.
Leah Howell, East Detroit
freshman, said she is hoping for a
new trend in the gifts she
receives this year.
"Every year I wish for a Mickey
Mouse watch, and every year I
don't get one. This year I hope I
am luckier."
Danny Fittro, Okemos senior,
said he wants a space-filler.
"I want a subleaser for 1725
Crawford, 772-4070," he said.
Andy Blazek, Virginia freshman, is looking for a keg of Mol-
son Ice for Christmas, but he will
not find it at the Sigma Phi
Kappa house, unless Gene
McKelvey gets his wish.
"What I want for Christmas is
for our national fraternity to reinstate our local chapter here at
CMU. I did not do anything.
Nationals yanking our charter
punishes the whole fraternity, so
I would really like my Phi Sig
charter back," said McKelvey,
Okemos senior.
Becky Novak, Grand Haven
freshman, is wishing for a way to
get off campus, hopefully, if
Santa can fit a car in his sleigh.
"I want a car, one that works
and does not make lots of noises,"
she said.
For Rob Roach, Deford freshman, "the ultimate Christmas
present for a college student is
money, and I want lots of it."
Heather Bartlett, Almont
freshman, was a little more sentimental.
"My parents have already
shelled out enough money for me
this year, and I would feel guilty
asking for some silly materialistic item," she said.
The only thing Lauren Fife,
Royal Oak freshman, wants is to
spend time with her boyfriend
who she has not been able to
spend time with in awhile.
Mamy Woodbeck, New Baltimore sophomore, said she would
just like a man tied up with a big
red ribbon.
