The election for student body
^ vice president was so close that
election director Mike Mobey and
his staff had to recount the vote
three times. The power blackout further hindered the counting.
Turnout for the election was
higher than most expected. The
majority of the voting was done
in dorms while 241 students voted
in the University Center.
The election was expected to
be close, with the outcome considered a toss-up. The vote in
the dorms was very close. Miss
Kempker's 145-96 margin in off-
campus voting proved the
difference.
Miss Kempker had no comment
after the election other than to
say that she was happy that the
student body had the confidence
to elect her to the office.
Canfield was very disappointed
saying, "I was the underdog
I ran a hard campaign. What
can I say?"
Student Body President Rick
Kedzierski said, "Pm happy that
students had the confidence in
Jan to' elect her, because she
is the person I can best work
with."

Jane arrives from prison
By LINDA CLARK

A bright green frisbee provided
la means of entertainment as a
[restless audience of students,
ifaculty member s and townspeople
ftwaited the arrival of Jane Fonda^
[actress turned activist, last night
|in Finch Fieldhouse.
Miss Fonda, who was detained
ton charges of smuggling and as-
fsulting an officer in Cleveland
|earlier in the day, arrived over
hour late for her speaking
I engagement.
"I quite literally just rushed
lover from prison," said Miss
Fonda. "Some of the bestpeople
|ln this country are in jail, and
I felt veryproudtobe with them,"
|she said.
Among those topics discussed
|by Miss Fonda were the Vietnam
[situation, the "Seattle EightGon-
jspiraey Trial/ Nixon troop with-
[drawl program and United States
prisons. ' -
"American institutions are
|wumbling as the principles on
Phich they are based are ofosoV
W said Miss Fonda. 'The
American system is closed to
those who try to fight war,
racism, and repression," she
said. "The three are all irrevocably interwoven," she
added.
' Miss Fonda expressed a deep
concern over present United
States policies toward Vietnam,
lis., there a time coming .when
all We have to do is push a
button and wipe out an entire
country?" she questioned.
Vietnamization was a topic
further discussed. Miss Fonda
Views slow peace negotiations
as an admission of United States
defeat.
"The United States has broken
every internationally-acknowledged war crime possible," she
continued.
Miss Fonda left directly after
her speech to.catch a return
flight from Tri City Airport to
Cleveland, where she faces arraignment today on charge's of
smuggling and assaulting an officer as she attempted to enter
the United States from Canada
Tuesday.
Blackout hits again;
entire campus affected
The lights went out all over
campus once again, this time
at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday night when
two-day' rains cut electrical
power for the fourth time this
semester. Lights all over Mt.
Pleasant flickered off for several seconds in some places and
dimmed briefly in others, but
ah
most off-campus dwellings lost
power for several seconds before restoration.
Jane Fonda, who spoke in
Finch Fieldhouse Tuesday night,
had just concluded her talk and
was leaving the Fleldhouse as
the lights flickered off.
Election officials were completing ballot counting in the
student body vice presidential
election between Jan Kempker
and Ken Canfield when the lights-
out forced a counting halt. Miss
Kemker was declared the winner
after officials made some final
tallies by candlelight.
In an isolated incident, a rock
was thrown through one of the
two glass front doors at Central
Hall. Public Safety is investigating.
Power was restored at about
11:20 p.m. This was the first
campus-wide power halt, and all
dorms, classroom buildings and
the U Center were blackened.
Officials late Tuesday, night
Could not be reached for comment as to why the power shortage Occured.
