TRACK TEAM
WINS
SIXTH STRAIGHT
HAC
TRACK TITLE
Sharon Lee LaPointe, Ionia senior, has been
selected valedictorian for the" 1969 June graduating,
class and Carole J. Nielsen, St. Joseph senior, has
been named salutatorian.
Miss LaPointe has attained a 3.96 overall with
a double major in sociology and psychologjf-during
her four years at Central.
She has_ accepted a fellowship here to receive
her masters ip psychology following graduation."
She will then go on to receive her specialists decree in* psychological testing. In the future she
hopes to become k school psychological examiner.
Member of Honorary
On campus she has been a member of Alpha
Lambda Delta, freshmen women's honorary.
Miss LaPointe also plays the piano and organ
and hasr written a book of poems.
Salutatorian Carole Nielsen has attained a 3.95
overall while attending Central since the fall of
1965. She is on an elementary education curriculum, majoring in English and minoring in Spanish.
Teaching Plans
After graduation, Carole plans on teaching
near her home in the St. Joseph-Stevensville area.
She will then continue school to receive her
masters degree.
'She. is especially interested in reading and
language arts and will concentrate in those areas.
Miss Nielsen is active in the Student Education
Association, Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Kappa Phi,
junior-senior honorary and Kappa Delta Pi which
is the'education honorary.
Both coeds will be honored at the commencement exercises on June 7 and will be delivering
the valedictorian and salutatorian addresses.

A new doctor in-a town full of healthy people
could become discouraged very quickly. On the
other hand, he might take the attitude that
"healthy people are sick people who don t know
they're sick." . „ ,. .
Such is the case in "Dr. Knock," a three-act
comedy-farce to be presented in Warrmer Auditorium Wednesday through Saturday.
French Original
' Originally written for the French stage, "Dr.
Knock" will be directed by J. Alan Hammack,
professor of speech.
Members of the casf featured are Dale Place,
Cheboygan freshman; Phil Abbott, HoweU sophomore; Jeana Rossie, Grand Blanc senior; Dane
Madsen, Grayling sophomore; Gerald Zehner,'
Royal Oak senior; Rebecca Stilwill, Grandville
sophomore and Jeffrey Grandel, Saginaw junior.
. "Comedy of Manners"
Billed as a "comedy of manners," the title
character of "Dr. Knock" is primarily concerned
with drumming up a clientele for himself, convincing people they are sick.
Costumes for the production have been created
by Doris Ramsey, instructor of speech and settings
have been designed by William Valle, assistant
professor of speech.
Tickets are now available at the UC ticket
office at $1 for students and $1.50 for non-students.
Season tickets, aire good for "this play.
Senior Activities
Omit Swing-Out
Twelve hundred and sixty-seven seniors are
scheduled to receive baccalaureate degrees June 7
as Central undergoes its 77th Commencement
Exercise.
Senior swing-out, scheduled for today, has been
cancelled due to lack of interest, according to the
administration.
The Senior Class Dinner Dance will be May 24,
6 to 12 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom.
Tickets may be purchased at the UC ticket office.
Commencement rehearsal will be held June 6
at 4 p.m. on the green in front of Central and
Grawn Halls for the march to Alumni Field.
All candidates for graduation will gather at
9:45 a.m., June 7, on College Avenue between Gay-
lord and Bellows streets. The procession will begin
at 10 a.m.
Caps and gowns and all additional parts of the
graduation outfits, including honor braids, are to
be picked up at the south door of the second floor
of Central Hall. The entire outfit must be returned
to the point of distribution by individual students
before diploma inserts will be given to graduates.
Commencement speaker will be James Leonard
Farmer, most noted for being a member of the
initial group which founded the Congress of Racial
Equality in Chicago in 1942.
He was the first national chairman of CORE
and in 1961 became its national director. Also in
1961, Farmer led CORE's first Freedom Ride and
as a result was held in Mississippi jails for over a
month.
Under his national leadership CORE succeeded
in initiating movements such as stand-ins, sit-ins
and jail-ins. Farmer was originally trained for the
Methodist ministry but refused to be ordained
because of the segregation then practiced by the
churches..
Farmer will be given an honorary degree from
the University.
The degrees to be given are as follows: B.A.A.,
19; B.S. in Education, 431; B.S. in Business, 94;
B.M., 7; B.S., 432; A.B., 294.
Two hundred and thirty-three graduate students will also receive degrees; M.B.A., 54; M.M.,
1; M.S., 20; M.A., 155; and Education Specialist, 3.

Yearbook Due;
Pick-up in UC
' The 1969 issue of Chippewa yearbook is
expected to arrive this week and will be
distributed Monday through Wednesday,
[May 26-28.
According to Lee O'Bryan, Fraser junior
and editor, students must bring their receipts
from 9 la.m. until noon and from 1 to 3 p.m.
on the distribution dates to the alcove in
the basement of the University Center..
Any yearbooks not picked up by Wednesday, May'28 will become the property of
Chippewa staff and will be sold on a first
come, first served basis for $4.
