New Library Head Named;
Eaton Starts in September
The new head of the library
at Central will be Dr. Orville L.
Eaton of Emporia, Kansas.
Dr. Eaton did undergraduate
work at Kansas State Teachers
College, majoring in education
and English. He received his doctorate from the University of
Kansas, and his Bachelor of Library Science degree from the
University of Chicago.
Dr. Eaton has been an English
teacher, editor, and writer, and
Director of Libraries at the University of Kansas City.
Dr. Eaton is also a member of
the White Book Award Administrative Committee and many library and education organizations. He has written articles and
lectured on library education, and
holds a five-year appointment to
the North Central Association as
a co-ordinator and inspector.
Dr. Eaton will begin his duties
at Central Michigan College in
September.
Artists Course Presents Arts Ensemble

Well Received
Last Monday
A small but appreciative audience attended the faculty recital
sponsored by the music depart-
in ent in Warriner Auditorium
Monday evening.
The artists who performed so
ably were Yda Lou Schultz, organist; Lucille Haynes, soprano;
and Robert Van Meter, pianist.
The perfection and artistry of
the musical numbers were well
appreciated by the listeners, who
gave each faculty member a
heart-felt round of applause.
The recital was part of the Artists Course offered to the summer
school students.
Typing Champion, George Hossfield,
To Give Lecture and Demonstration
A typing demonstration will be
given by George L. Hossfield,
holder of five world and national
championships, Tuesday, at 2
p.m. in 303 Central Hall.
Mr. Hossfield will lecture on
the subject and demonstrate various techniques.
He has typed at the speed of
145 words per minute and this
year won his tenth World's
Professional Championship. Other titles that he holds
are the Eastern States and
American Novice Championships, and the World Novice
and Amateur Championships.
Books published by the speaker
include Brief Typing, One Hand
Typing, and One Hand Typing
For The Right Hand.
Hossfield has lectured at schools
and colleges throughout the U.S.
and Canada, as well as appearing
on television and radio shows and
in Underwood demonstration
movies.
The Arts Ensemble, a vocal
quartet from Chicago, will appear
in an Artists Course presentation
in Warriner Auditorium, Monday
at 8 p.m.
The group, consisting of Eileen
Deneen, soprano; Patricia Sage,
contralto; Alan Rogers, tenor, and
Miles Nekolny, baritone, will sing
classical and semi-classical numbers.
The Arts Ensemble is a
unique organization blending
the voices of four young American artists, each accomplished
in his own right.
Their programs feature scenes
from grand operas enacted in costume with explanatory narrations
by Robert Moore.
Each member of the quartet
has had solo appearances with
outstanding musical organizations,
including the Chicago Lyric
Opera, the New York City Center
Opera Company, and major symphonies throughout the country.
Included in Monday's program
are selections from the Broadway
shows "The King and I," "Lil Ab-
ner," "Our Town," "Carousel,"
"Oklahoma," and "Porgy . and
Bess."
The quartet will also sing
excerpts from "Die Fleder-
maus by Strauss and ihe quartet from "Rigoletto," by Verdi.
Mr. Nekolny will sing the prologue from "Pagliacci," by Leoncavallo.
Evelyn Malouf, who will accompany the singers, also will
play a piano solo, "Hungarian
Rhapsody No. 12," by Liszt.
TORNADO SIGNALS
EXPLAINED
If a tornado is imminent, there
will be a long blast from the
whistle on the college heating
plant followed by a 30 second rest
and another long blast. The all
clear signal is three short blasts.
This is in addition to the
whistle at Borden's plant at the
other end of town.

Free TB Tests Offered Here;
Students, Faculty Asked to Volunteer

of having a small amount of tuberculin placed between the outer
layers of the skin.
Free tuberculin tests will be
offered to summer session students Monday and Tuesday at
Keeler Union 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If the area becomes reddened,
ii means ihe person has been
exposed to tuberculosis sometimes during his life and has
TB germs in his body. If there
is no reaction, this indicates the
person has no TB germs in his
body.
Persons taking the test will
come back two days later to have
the test checked. Persons reacting
to the test may have chest x-rays
at the mobile unit which will be
here Wednesday and Thursday.
Central is one of seven schools
included in the testing program
sponsored by the Michigan Department of Health and the Michigan Tuberculosis Association.
Main purpose of ihe program
is io determine prevalence of
tuberculosis in the student age
group.
The program also is designed to
point out to teachers that the tuberculin test is available for use
in schools and to stimulate public
awareness of the need for TB control.
Other colleges in the program
are the University of Michigan,
Michigan State University, Western Michigan University, Wayne
State University, Eastern Michigan College and Flint Junior College.
ATTENTION
GRADUATING SENIORS
Students completing work for a
degree and/or certificate in August 1958 must report at Warriner
Hall Auditorium next Wednesday, July 16 at 4 p.m. to fill out
required forms.
Students earning a teaching
certificate will take the oath of
allegiance at this time.
