Chippewa Pictures
Taken Next Week
Individual student pictures for
the Chipewa will be taken September 29 thru October 3rd in
Sloan basement.
Monday is reserved for seniors,
Tuesday for juniors, Wednesday
for sophomores, Thursday (all
day) and Friday morning for
freshmen, Friday afternoon is reserved for students Who were unable to meet the scheduled time.
Women students are requested
to wear dark sweaters and the
men, White shirts and dark ties.
A one dollar fee will be charged
at the time the picture is, taken.
The schedule of group pictures 16 be taken next Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday, and,
Thursday is now posted on the
, bulletin board ,in the" Keeler
Union. All organization presidents are requested lo check the
board for the lime of their picture and put their initials after
their organization name. Should

Central Adds 24 New Faculty Member
Buchanan Praises
Student Leaders
Sixty-four student leaders assisted freshmen and transfer students during the recent orientation program. These student leaders returned to campus at an
early date, according to Austin J.
Buchanan, Director of Admissions.
"Our hope is that every new
student feels more at home at
Central because of the orientation
p r o g r a m," Director Buchanan
said.
"Congratulations are due these
student leaders on the performance of a very nice job."
Student Senate
Reviews NSA
Evaluation of the National Student Association meeting was the
principal topic of discussion at the
first student senate meeting of
the year.
Central was only one in over
400 colleges and universities
represented ai the meeting and
our representatives were only
five of over one million voices'
that the Nation Student Association represents. ,
Fred Mester, President of the
student body, attended the student body president's conference,
and Jo Cline, Cammie Stephenson, Arlee Rosenberg, Carolyn
Taylor, and Jo Lee Hurlbut were
Central's representatives at the
student association conference
which was held at Ohio Wesleyan
University.
The association conference
was considered io be of great
value io those who attended
and to their respective schools.
It gave ihe students as individuals and ihe college at large the
opportunity io share in a mass
student exchange of ideas' in re-'
laiionship io the educational
community. A report of the entire conference will be "released
io the students in the near future.
Candidacy Make-Ups
Scheduled Oct. 16
Make up in English and
mathematics, required for admission lo candidacy will be
given as follows. Junior and
senior at 3:30 p.m., October 16;
sophomores ai 3:30 p.m., Dec.
4; and freshmen on Jan. 8 at
3:30 p.m.

Filson Recognized

Decorations Ideas
The J-Hop Committee is conducting a contest for ideas for
decorations according to Nancy
Cockerill, junior class secretary.
The person submitting the best
idea will receive $10. Deadline
for ideas is Oct. 10. Ideas should
be sent to J-Hop, Box 334 on
campus.
Sororities Display
On Tuesday, from 7 p.m. to 9
p.m., all sororities will have displays in Keeler Ballroom. All
girls interested in rushing a sorority this semester should attend
this display.
Sorority rushing will begin October 3. Girls must be at least
second semester freshmen and
have maintained a 2 point average
to be eligible. Transfer students
must have at least 13 hours of
"C" work at Central before rushing.

Sir John Gielgud to Open
1958 Artists Course Season

Sir John Gielgud will make his
premier performance in Warriner
Auditorium to open the 1958-59
Artists Course series, Mr. Fred
Bush of the speech and drama department has announced. Presenting "Shakespeare's Age of Man,"
Gielgud will appear Monday, October 20. In addition to his acclaim at home where he has been
a leading member of the Old Vic
Company and a star on the West
End of London and at Stratford-
on-Avon, Sir John is familiar to
U.S. audiences. He has appeared
on Broadway in "Crime and Punishment" and the "Importance of
Being Earnest" as well as in several other plays.
Tuesday, November 18, will
find Byron Janis, noted concert
pianist, at Central for an evenings entertainment.

Price who will appear at Central Wednesday, December 3,

and in Paris. Miss Price is married io William Warfield, who

The Clebanoff Strings will present Moods in Music in the auditorium Monday, January 12. In
the concert Clebanoff conducts
selections ranging fr^m the works
of Vivaldi to the modern ballads.
Clebanoff began his study of
the violin when he was five and
joined the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra while still in his teens.
Since then, he has branched out
into all phases of music as con-
certmaster, conductor and soloist
with the country's greatest orchestras. » )
The final course of the series
will be presented by the National
Ballet of Canada Monday,1 March
2. The group is noted for its productions of such ballets a* Swan

Vets Must Register
To Receive Benefits
Veterans eligible for benefits
under any law must be registered
with the Admissions Office. Calenders giving dates of required
monthly reports are available in
the Admissions Office. On-campus vets must sign monthly re--
port for the period of September
17-September 30, or Wednesday
October 1. Saturday students are
to sign for their benefits for the
first time on September 27.
Monthly reports will be signed
as in the past in the Records Office. Notice to sign monthly reports will appear on the bulletin
board .in foyer of Warriner Hall
and the Student Life. It is the
veteran's responsibility to file his
reports.

Frats Vie for Plaque
The TAU and TKE fraternities
have fought hard the past year
for the prized Interfraternity
Scholarship Award,
In the fall semester TKE gained
control of the plaque by a Slim
.005 of a point with their 2.479
average, TAU regained the
plaque in the spring semester
with an average of 2.49 only .093
of a point above TKE.

Four Men Named
To English Staff
Twenty-four new members
have joined Central's faculty and
staff this semester.
Four new instructors can be
found in the English department.
They are Dr. William G. Butt,
Leland H. Chambers, Joseph F.
Gabriel, and David Sprey.
Dr. Butt has his Master's degree
from Michigan State University
and his Doctor's degree from
the University of Mississippi. He
taught at Michigan State University before coming here to fill
the vacancy caused by Dr. Cuff's
death.
Mr. Chambers was hired from
Indiana University where he received his Master's degree. He has
been working on his doctoral at
the University of Michigan.
With a Master's degree from
the University of Pennsylvania
Mr. Gabriel comes to Central
from Drexel Institute. He fills the
vacancy caused by Dr. Beck's retirement.
Mr. Sprey has taken over Mr.
Arthur Rice's position as adviser
to Central's Chippewa staff. Mr.
Rice resigned to accept the editor's position on the M.E.A. Journal. Mr. Sprey was formerly on
the faculty at Cornell College in
Iowa. He has his Master's in
Jouornalism from Boston University.
Appointed as the new head of
the college library is Dr. Orville
L. Eaton. Dr. Eaton is from Emporia Kansas Teachers College
and has his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. He fills the vacancy caused by Mr. Jesse
Thorpe's death.
Replacing Mrs. Margaret Millar in the Art department is Dr.
Alexander J. Zawacki who received his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in art education.
Dr. James M. Richcreek, former
head of health and physical education at Henderson State Teachers College in Arkansas, has become part of Central's physical
education staff. He received his
Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska.
Besides a new building for its
classes the psychology and education department have two new
instructors: Dr. Roger J. Goen-
ner and Lile Sherwood.
Dr. Goenner was the former
superintendent of schools in Burlington, Wyoming. He received
his educational degree from the
University of Wyoming.
Mis Sherwood is a 1955 graduate of Central. She was an elementary principal in Greenville
public school system last year.
She received her Master's degree
from Central.
Two new faces are in the mathematics department. Archie K.
Lytle, a graduate of Western
Michigan University, received his
Master's degree from the University of Michigan. He taught at
Clarkston high school from 1954-
57.
The other new mathematics instructor is Mrs. Pamela Spacie.
Mrs. Spacie was Tate Hall housemother last year. She has a Master's degree from the Univeitdty
of Iowa.
The newest addition to the
music faculty is Dr. Lawrence R.
Smith. He has a Ph.D. from
Northwestern University.
Paul S. Spece has been added
to the commerce department. He
has a M.B.A. from the University
of Detroit.
The position of assistant instructor in the Public Services division has been filled by Charles
Owens. He has his Bachelor's degree from Central. He taught in
Rogers City last year.
The Health Service has two
new nurses from St. Mary's hospital in Saginaw. They are Helen
L. Bechtel and Shirley Ann V'al-
lier.
Four vacant positions in
R.O.T.C. have been filled by Capt.
Laxley R. Scott, Capt Lynn R.1-
Raybould, M/Sgt. Robert E. Wal-
lis, and SFC Francis C. O'Donnell.
Beginning this semester Central
has three new housemothers. They
are Mrs. Elsie Paull of Coldwater,
Mrs. Greta Masten of Clare, and
Mrs. Mae Fleming of Mt. Pleasant.
Mrs. Paull replaced Mrs. Edith

Monday is reserved for seniors, Tuesday for juniors, Wednesday for sophomores, Thursday (all day) and Friday morning for freshmen, Friday afternoon is reserved for students Who were unable to meet the scheduled time. Women students are requested to wear dark sweaters and the men, White shirts and dark ties. A one dollar fee will be charged at the time the picture is, taken. Central Adds 24 New Faculty Member Buchanan Praises Student Leaders Sixty-four student leaders assisted freshmen and transfer students during the recent orientation program. These student leaders returned to campus at an early date, according to Austin J. Buchanan, Director of Admissions. "Our hope is that every new student feels more at home at Central because of the orientation p r o g r a m" Director Buchanan said. "Congratulations are due these student leaders on the performance of a very nice job." Student Senate Reviews NSA Evaluation of the National Student Association meeting was the principal topic of discussion at the first student senate meeting of the year. Central was only one in over 400 colleges and universities represented ai the meeting and our representatives were only five of over one million voices' that the Nation Student Association represents. , Fred Mester, President of the student body, attended the student body president's conference, and Jo Cline, Cammie Stephenson, Arlee Rosenberg, Carolyn Taylor, and Jo Lee Hurlbut were Central's representatives at the student association conference which was held at Ohio Wesleyan University. The association conference was considered io be of great value io those who attended and to their respective schools. It gave ihe students as individuals and ihe college at large the opportunity io share in a mass student exchange of ideas' in re-' laiionship io the educational community. Filson as a scientist / J-Hop Leaders Seek Decorations Ideas The J-Hop Committee is conducting a contest for ideas for decorations according to Nancy Cockerill, junior class secretary. The person submitting the best idea will receive $10. Deadline for ideas is Oct. 10. Ideas should be sent to J-Hop, Box 334 on campus. Sororities Display On Tuesday, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., all sororities will have displays in Keeler Ballroom. All girls interested in rushing a sorority this semester should attend this display. Sorority rushing will begin October 3. Girls must be at least second semester freshmen and have maintained a 2 point average to be eligible. Transfer students must have at least 13 hours of "C" work at Central before rushing. Sir John Gielgud to Open 1958 Artists Course Season 691 .17$ Sir John Gielgud will make his premier performance in Warriner Auditorium to open the 1958-59 Artists Course series, Mr. Fred Bush of the speech and drama department has announced. Presenting "Shakespeare's Age of Man" Gielgud will appear Monday, October 20. In addition to his acclaim at home where he has been a leading member of the Old Vic Company and a star on the West End of London and at Stratford- on-Avon, Sir John is familiar to U.S. audiences. He has appeared on Broadway in "Crime and Punishment" and the "Importance of Being Earnest" as well as in several other plays. Tuesday, November 18, will find Byron Janis, noted concert pianist, at Central for an evenings entertainment. "A downright sensational soprano" was how the Washington News described' Leontyne Price who will appear at Central Wednesday, December 3, Miss Price'has loured interna* MRS. Miss Price is married io William Warfield, who appeared ai Central last year. The Clebanoff Strings will present Moods in Music in the auditorium Monday, January 12. In the concert Clebanoff conducts selections ranging fr^m the works of Vivaldi to the modern ballads. Clebanoff began his study of the violin when he was five and joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra while still in his teens. Since then, he has branched out into all phases of music as con- certmaster, conductor and soloist with the country's greatest orchestras. » ) The final course of the series will be presented by the National Ballet of Canada Monday,1 March 2. CHAMBERS RICHCREEK Vets Must Register To Receive Benefits Veterans eligible for benefits under any law must be registered with the Admissions Office. Calenders giving dates of required monthly reports are available in the Admissions Office. On-campus vets must sign monthly re-- port for the period of September 17-September 30, or Wednesday October 1. Saturday students are to sign for their benefits for the first time on September 27. Monthly reports will be signed as in the past in the Records Office. Notice to sign monthly reports will appear on the bulletin board .in foyer of Warriner Hall and the Student Life. MAE FLEMING Frats Vie for Plaque The TAU and TKE fraternities have fought hard the past year for the prized Interfraternity Scholarship Award, In the fall semester TKE gained control of the plaque by a Slim .005 of a point with their 2.479 average, TAU regained the plaque in the spring semester with an average of 2.49 only .093 of a point above TKE. A copy editor is especially needed. Four Men Named To English Staff Twenty-four new members have joined Central's faculty and staff this semester. Four new instructors can be found in the English department. They are Dr. William G. Butt, Leland H. Chambers, Joseph F. Gabriel, and David Sprey. Dr. Butt has his Master's degree from Michigan State University and his Doctor's degree from the University of Mississippi. He taught at Michigan State University before coming here to fill the vacancy caused by Dr. Cuff's death. Mr. Chambers was hired from Indiana University where he received his Master's degree. He has been working on his doctoral at the University of Michigan. With a Master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania Mr. Gabriel comes to Central from Drexel Institute. He fills the vacancy caused by Dr. Beck's retirement. Mr. Sprey has taken over Mr. Arthur Rice's position as adviser to Central's Chippewa staff. Mr. Rice resigned to accept the editor's position on the M.E.A. Journal. Mr. Sprey was formerly on the faculty at Cornell College in Iowa. He has his Master's in Jouornalism from Boston University. Appointed as the new head of the college library is Dr. Orville L. Eaton. Dr. Eaton is from Emporia Kansas Teachers College and has his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. He fills the vacancy caused by Mr. Jesse Thorpe's death. Replacing Mrs. Margaret Millar in the Art department is Dr. Alexander J. Zawacki who received his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in art education. Dr. James M. Richcreek, former head of health and physical education at Henderson State Teachers College in Arkansas, has become part of Central's physical education staff. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska. Besides a new building for its classes the psychology and education department have two new instructors: Dr. Roger J. Goen- ner and Lile Sherwood. Dr. Goenner was the former superintendent of schools in Burlington, Wyoming. He received his educational degree from the University of Wyoming. Mis Sherwood is a 1955 graduate of Central. She was an elementary principal in Greenville public school system last year. She received her Master's degree from Central. Two new faces are in the mathematics department. Archie K. Lytle, a graduate of Western Michigan University, received his Master's degree from the University of Michigan. He taught at Clarkston high school from 1954- 57. The other new mathematics instructor is Mrs. Pamela Spacie. Mrs. Spacie was Tate Hall housemother last year. She has a Master's degree from the Univeitdty of Iowa. The newest addition to the music faculty is Dr. Lawrence R. Smith. He has a Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Paul S. Spece has been added to the commerce department. He has a M.B.A. from the University of Detroit. The position of assistant instructor in the Public Services division has been filled by Charles Owens. He has his Bachelor's degree from Central. He taught in Rogers City last year. The Health Service has two new nurses from St. Mary's hospital in Saginaw. They are Helen L. Bechtel and Shirley Ann V'al- lier. Four vacant positions in R.O.T.C. have been filled by Capt. Laxley R. Scott, Capt Lynn R.1- Raybould, M/Sgt. Robert E. Wal- lis, and SFC Francis C. O'Donnell. Beginning this semester Central has three new housemothers. They are Mrs. Elsie Paull of Coldwater, Mrs. Greta Masten of Clare, and Mrs. Mae Fleming of Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Paull replaced Mrs. Edith Moore, who retired this year after 10 years as Barnard's house- mother. Mrs. Paull came to Central from the University 6f Illinois where she spent the ^ past year as a student and resident housemother. Mrs. Paull has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan. Ronan Hall's new housemother is Mrs. Masten. She replaced Mrs. Marcia Palmer who transferred to. Calkins Hall.
