Debators Win Highest Honors
in Intercollegiate Tourney
Central Michigan College debaters won the highest honors in
both divisions at the Michigan
Intercollegiate Speech League
Tournament in East Lansing recently.
Dean Bailey, tied with Joe
Munk, Albion College senior, for
top individual honors in Division
A. Edna Martinson won the highest individual award in Division
B.

Band to Feature
Diefz Composition
at Winter Concert
The Annual Winter Concert
will be presented by the Central
Michigan Concert Band under the
direction of Norman Dietz, professor of music, March 11 at 4 p.m.
in the Auditorium.
A feature of the program will
be ihe premiere performance of
"The Three Sketches," a composition by Mr. Dietz. The composition is composed of three
parts, "The Call," "The Meditation," and "The Adventure."
Other selections in the program
will be "Eurvanthe Overture" by
Von Weber, "Jesu of Man's Desiring" by Bach, "Andre Chemier"
by Giordano, Persichetti's "Pageant" and "Commandante" by
Guentzel.
This is the first year the concert
has been held on Sunday. The social calendar lists the 4 o'clock
performance incorrectly.
Miss Martinson also received
the honor of getiing ihe highest
individual score of all the 132
debaters representing 14 Michigan colleges and universities at
this annual state tournament.
Central, with five teams in the
tournament, won 10 of their 15
debates and won all five of the
cross-examination style debates.
Central teams thus maintained
the perfect record of never having lost a cross-examination debate in the state tournament since
this type was initiated four years
ago.
Each debater was given an individual rating by the judges, and
those showing outstanding merit
received achievement awards.
Nine out of 10 representatives received "Excellence" awards.
In addition to the first place
awards won by Bailey and Miss
Martinson, "Excellence" awards
were presented to Mario Davison, Laura Pizzala, and Cy
Pombier in Division A.
In Division B "Excellence"
awards were presented to Dick
Eisenach, Dick Enberg, Joe Scott,
and Gloria Waltz.
Central teams defeated Western
3 to 0, Wayne 3 to 1, M.S.U. 2 to 0,
and Albion 1 to 1.
Identification cards for all students who have had their picture
taken this semester are now available at the Admissions and Records Office. Each student should
present his matriculation card in
order to obtain his identification
card.
Prospective Educators Unite
in Future Teachers Club
Lincoln Books Donated by Local Doctor
Plans are being formulated for
the organization of a "Future
Teachers Club" at Central Michigan College. This action was
brought about at the request of
numerous interested students.
At a recent meeting, a constitution was drawn up, approved by
Dean Sharp, and is now being
submitted to the Student Senate.
The primary objective of the
club will deal with the recruiting
of good teachers. Membership is
open to all students interested in
education or teaching.

Public Recital Monday
to Feature DeJonge,
Past 'Messiah7 Soloist
James DeJonge, professor of
voice at Calvin College, Grand
Rapids, will present a public recital Monday at 8:15 p.m. in the
Ballroom.
Mr. DeJonge appeared as tenor
soloist in the "Messiah" with the
Central Michigan College Community Festival Chorus in 1953.
The recital, sponsored by the
department of music, will include
songs of contemporary English
and American composers, a Mozart aria, and a group of Schumann songs.
Appleblossom Club will transfer its membership and present
assets to the new organiaztion.
Temporary officers include
Shirley Andrews, chairman, and
Evelyn Moore, secretary. Members of the planning committee
are Kenneth Kelley, Gloria Waltz,
Rosallia Bierd, Laura Pizzala, Archie Stobie and Joy Phillips.
Sponsors of the club are Curtis
Nash, associate professor of psychology and education, Richard
Cronk, division of field services
and Franklin Killian, associate
professor of rural education.
A collection of books dealing
with the life of Abraham Lincoln
has been presented to the Central Library. The Thompson-Lincoln Collection of books was presented by Dr. Edward C. Thompson, local optometrist.
The collection is composed of
over 100 volumes of books and
many pamphlets. Also included
in the collection is a large portrait of Abraham Lincoln and
his cabinet.
The books are located on the
second, floor of the Library in the
reference rooms, and are open to.
students by special permission.

Sigma Beta Tau Turns Pi Kappa Phi,
Becomes CMC's 5th National Fraternity
Beta Xi Chapter of Pi Kappa i
Phi became the fifth national social fraternity on Central's campus last weekend. An installation
team from Michigan State University and several national officers of Pi Kappa Phi were here
to initiate and install members of
Sigma Beta Tau and three alumni
as Pi Kapp's 51st undergraduate
chapter.
Members and guests were
welcomed by Charles Anspach,
Central Michigan College's
president, and heard him speak
on the values of a fraternity on
a college campus ai iheir installation banquet in the Ballroom
Saturday evening.
The new officers of the charter
group are Dick Burdick, archon;
Bob Luedtke, treasurer; Fred
Schmidt, secretary; Don Perry,
warden; Don Friebe, historian;
Ralph Wood, chaplain.

members at a reception Sunday j
afternoon in the Ballroom. I

127 Women Affiliate in 1956 Sorority Rush Season
One hundred and twenty-seven
Central women are wearing the
colors of the 10 campus sororities
this week as the 1956 formal
rushing season ends.
Names of the prospective sorority members were announced
Tuesday afternoon by D. Louise
Sharp, dean of women. Initial
Pledging ceremonies, or ribboning, took place this week.
Alpha Sigma Alpha has pledged
15 women. They are Ann Andres,
