musical Christmas tree formed by members of the Varsity Choir.
CMCE Christmas Concert Pleases Audience
by Mary Ellen Sweeney
"Christmas Comes Again" was
the title and theme of the annual
Christmas Concert presented last
Monday evening in Warriner Auditorium.
The curtain opened on the Concert Choir against a background
which gave the illusion of multicolored stained glass windows in
a modern effect.
"Hodie Christus naius est"
(Today Christ Is Born), a joyful
proclamation of ihe birth of
Christ by G. P. Palesirina, was
their opening number. It set ihe
audience in ihe true spirit of ihe
t i Chrisimas season.
"The Shepherds Had an Angel"
by Maurice Besly with soloists,
Angela Di Ceglie, Saginaw freshman, soprano; and Jack Johnson,
Six Lakes freshman, oboe; and
"Mary Had a Baby" arranged by
William Dawson with soloist,
Betty Rae Brisse, Harbor Beach
sophomore, soprano were highlights of this portion.
The second part of the program
featured the Madrigal Singers,
members of the Concert Choir.
Their name is taken from Old
English meaning the singing of
a lyric set to music, unaccompanied, and in parts.
Among their numbers were:
the ancient English, "Wassail,
Wassail"; "In the Bleak Mid-Winter" by Gustav Hoist with William Knapp, Mt. Pleasant freshman, tenor soloist; and "Lullabye
on Christmas Eve" by F. Melius
Christiansen with Lorraine Oster-
m a n, Standish sophomore, soprano soloist.
.The Modern Dance Group with
the background singing of the
Concert Choir began the third
portion of the Christmas Concert.
The frolicsome "Serbian Crib
Carol" arranged by Harvey Gaul
was their first number followed
by the traditional "The Twelve
Days of Christmas" arranged by1
Mae Nightingale.
The Womens' Glee Club followed the dancers with the Tyrolean "Shepherd's Christmas
Carol." "A Rockin' All Night" a
soft, sentimental spiritual from
St. Helena Island with Beverly
Fitzgerald, Morley freshman, as
soprano soloist concluded the
third part of "Christmas Comes
Again."
As the curtain rose on the last
part of "Christmas Comes Again"
the audience was pleasantly surprised with a living Christmas
tree made up of members of the
Varsity Choir. The girls, in bright-
colored sweaters represented the
decorations.
Dianne Eissinger, Flushing
sophomore, and Don Kasper, Bay
City sophomore, are to be commended for their excellent readings during- the program.
