Citizenship
Discussed
More than 100 teachers and
high school students of history
and social studies from 27 nearby
schools attended the Citizenship
Conference at Central last Saturday.
, "The Bill of Rights, cannot work
unless the individual citizen assumes the responsibility for making
it work," emphasized Professor
Harold M. Dorr, department of political science, U. of M., in the
opening speech of the meeting.
The forums were well attended.
Speaking at the noon meeting,
John W. Lederle, also of U. of M.,
discussed the trend toward centralization of power, the tendency
toward executive and legislative cooperation, and elimination of the
spoils system.
"Democracy is the middle of the
road between absolute individualism and absolute autocracy," stated
Dean E. R. Isbelle of Michigan
State Normal college in the closing
speech of the conference. "The
middle of the road is always the
most difficult to achieve and therefore citizenship training is necessary."
Sigma Tau Delta
Installs Officers
Installation of officers of Sigma
Tau Delta will take place Wednesday, May 8 from 7 to 8 p. m. in Keeler Union women's lounge.
The new officers to be installed
are: president, Kathleen Pratt,
Scottville junior; vice-president,
Marilla Parfitt, Perrinton sophomore; secretary, Jane White, Mber-
ta junior; treasurer, Marjory Baer,
Croswell junior; historian, Elaine
Jessup, Breckenridge junor; marshal, Margaret Stuwe, Vassar sophomore; and publicity, Porothy Pratt,
Davison junior.
Festival Features
Morgan and Cobb
The A Cappella choir, orchestra
and Madrigals last night presented
the first of a series- of three musical
programs in .honor of National
Music week.
Daniel Cobb
Virginia Haskins, coloratura soprano of radio and stage, was the
featured artist.
This evening, May 8, Miss Virginia iMorgan, solo harpist with
the San Francisco symphony, will
present a solo recital In connection
With the glee club and orchestra
program.
Mr. Daniel Cobb, baritone, will be
soloist at the band concert tomorrow
evening. Mr. Cobb has appeared in
leading roles with the Philadelphia
Opera company.
Freshmen Will Present
One-Act Play Festival
Fifty freshman students wilL participate in a One-act Play Festival
featuring nine one-act plays on
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
evening, May 13, 14, and 15, in Warriner hall auditorium at 8:15.
Three plays will be presented each
evening. The admission price for
all nine plays is 30c including
tax. Plays will ber directed by
members of Mr. Fred Bush's play
production class.
"Little Prison," directed by Joan
Muntz and Jane Goff, will be enacted by Joan Bush, Noreen Dickinson, Beverly Hooker, Fanny Van
Sickle, and Ann Ensign; "When the
Sun Rises," directed by Betty Olmstead and Arlene Kerton, with Minor Haskell, Margaret Metcalf and
Harold Patten.
"The Necklace Is Mine," is directed by Donna Ingersoll and JOan
Fultz, With Florence McConnell,
Anita Gay, Marcia Linp, Phillis
Worstell, and Eli Engen in the cast,
Suppressed Desires," directed by
Janet Duhcan 'and Virginia Smith,
, stars Meegan Kelly, Russel Raymond and Mary Scherich.
The cast of "Sham," directed by
Jean Chisholm and Iris Wilcox, includes LeRoy Watt, Dorothy Kasel,
Ervin Ignash, and Bob Chipman.
In "Miss Doulton's Orchids," directed by Elenore Brietzke and
Beverly Marzolf, are Phillis Sterna-
man, Dorcas Dorman, Dorothy
Lamb, Stan Traines, Clifford Clack
and Harold Sabin.
"A Woman of Character," directed by Gwen Gwinn and William
Lanshaw, is presented by Ruth Clu-
nie, Dolores Woloson, Barbara
Borchers, Norma Gullekson, Kay
Stilson, Marge Johnson, Mary Anne
Schaffer, Jo Ann Baltzer, and Mildred Fisher.
"They're None of Them Perfect,"
is directed by Jane Camlin and
Carle Jenkins, and Muriel Lyon,
Marilyn VanSickle,' Mary Welsh,
Jane Douglas, Phyllis Munro, Jean
Smith and George Kasel compose
the cast.
"Question of Figures," directed by
Patricia Jahnke and Ruth Hall, is
enacted by Jo Ann Medler, Jean
Baumgartner, Betty Davenport,
Shirley Nonnman, Kathryn Ooe, and
Bette Rasmussen.
AWS Plans
Spring Ball
"Moonlight Merry -Go- Round,"
the lAssociated. Women Students'
annual spring ball, will take place
Saturday, May 25, in Keeler ballroom from 9 to 12 p. m., with
Chandler's orchestra from Detroit
providing the music.
Alice McClure, Alma sophomore
and general chairman, has chosen
the following committees: decorations, Donna Ingersoll, North
Branch sophomore, and Bessie Parfitt, Perrinton sophomore; publicity,
Lucia Labrosse, Standish freshman,
and Anne Owens, Pontiac freshman;

Places Second
Beverly Marzolf, Ithaca sophomore, became the fifth Central
Michigan College co-ed - to place
second in the annual poetry contest when she read "We Walk In
Shadow" and "For the Undefeated"
in the State Poetry Reading contest at Calvin, College iii Grand
Rapids Friday, May 3.
Clara Morrison from Albion College placed first by having a total
rating of 25 as xscmpared to the
rating of 23 for Beverly.
Kathryn Dreyer, Monroe junior,
represented Central in the prose
reading contest for women. Other
Central representatives at the festival were Jeanette McDowell; Margaret Blue; Dr. Herbert Curry, associate professor of speech, and Dr.
Wilbur Moore, speech department
head.
College Plans One-Day Workshop
in Aeronautical Education Soon
A one-day workshop in aviation
education is being prepared for
Thursday, May 9, from 9 a. m. to
6:30 p. m., by the college department of aeronautics with the aid of
the State Department of Public Instruction, the Michigan State Department of Aeronautics, the Civil
Aeronautics Administration and the
Army Air Forces Liaison Division.
This is one of six such workshops
to be held in Michigan during the
month of May.
The purpose of the meeting is to
acquaint teachers, supervisors and
administrators with experiences and
materials concerning the social, cultural and vocational implications of
aviation at all levels of education,
from elementary school to college.
At this meeting the new State Department Bulletin, "Air Age in
Michigan," will have its initial
distribution.
As a very special feature, all
persons-' attending the workshop
will be given a free airplane ride
at the local airport.
The workshop will begin at 9
a. m. with a welcoming address by
Mr. J. P. Carey, head of the department of aeronautics. Following will
be speeches by President C. L. Anspach on "Aviation Education";
Horace S. Gilbert, Aviation Education Consultant, on the "Functions
of the Civil Aeronautics Administration"; and Steve Cjonroy, from
the Michigan Department of Aeronautics. A group of Army air
training liaison officers will give a
demonstration on devices and training aids.
At noon there will be a luncheon
at Keeler union and the speaker
will be Dr. W. F. McGinnis from
New Varsity club members Joe Leadem, Bill Theunissen, and Don
Grill are being put through the, paces of initiation by Tony Pabalis.
Mt. Pleasant. His topic will he "A
Layman's View of Aviation Education."
During the afternoon session the/
special phases of aviation education
will be discussed. Miss Alice Adams,
from the elementary laboratory
school; Mr. Richard L. Wysong, secondary laboratory school; " Mr. G.

school; and Mr. George & DePuy,
Industrial Arts department, will
speak on aviation in the schools and
extra curricular activities.
In the late afternoon a flight, experience session will be held at the
Mt. Pleasant Municipal Airport.
All teachers and administrators
and others'with an interest in the
subject are urged to attend..
Professor Carey, head of the aeronautics department, is general
chairman of the workshop. Assisting
him on the general committee are:

registration, Betty J. Duerr; luncheon, T. W. Cook; publicity, MlH. Filson; airport tour, Harry C. Phillips;

Australian Bride
Conies to Central
Russel Abbey of Lakeview left this
week for Chicago to meet his wife
and three year old twin sons, Robert
and Russell Jr., whom he has never
seen.
His wife, Rhonda, is one of the
Australian war brides who arrived
in this • country last week aboard
the SS David Shanks, Abbey has
not Seen his wife since their parting in Adelaide, Australia, nearly
four years ago,
A member of the famous Co. "E"
of the 125th Infantry 32nd. Division, Russ was stationed near Adelaide in the early summer of 1942.
He met his wife at a party in Adelaide and they were married in,
June. Three weeks later he was ordered out on the action that made i
Company "E" famous, the feat of
mapping the route across the New '
Guinea from Port Moresby.
Mrs. Abbey will join her husoand
at Central where they will live in
"Vetville."
Math Fraternity
Dines, Initiates
Kappa Mu Epsilon, mathematical
fraternity, will have a dinner in
Keeler Union and initiation in the
Den tonight from 7:30 to 9:30. The
new members of the organization
are: Roy Williams, Lincoln sophomore, Keith Palmanteer, Midland
sophomore, and Adelbert Plummer,
Hadley junior.
