Wednesday
By Henry Smith
After a week's layoff and a brief
vacation over Memorial Day at
Houghton Lake, this columnist returns to write his final column as
he prepares for graduation and the
armed services. Central Michigan
college has progressed rapidly since
the columnist entered as a freshman
back in the fall of '39. Dr. Charles
L. Anspach, as president of the college, has established an outstanding
record during his early years here.
He, too, began his duties here in the
fall of '39. Central's faculty and
students have built the college into
one of the finest in the country. It
is not until one gets to foe senior
or until he is ready to leave the Alma Mater that he gets a lump in his
throat. The college has done well
by him. He entered with a class of
500. He leaves with a class of 130.
The armed services have called
many classmates to war. Others
have fallen by the wayside during
the years. He has gained friends who
can never be replaced. He has
gained knowledge which also can
never be replaced. As school draws
to a close he wonders what, faces
him in the future. At present the
war occupies much of his mind. But
after the war there will be problems—problems of security, etc. "Alma Mater hear us now, ever more
we praise thee. Hear us pledge our
sacred vow, ever to defend thee.
Mighty Mother, Queen of Earth
Eternal, precious emblem of our
lives supreme, ever symbolizing
truth and knowledge, in glorified
esteem." So long, Central; hello,
world.
