In Midland county a stenographer

The musical moKes who, in the name

There is said to be at least double
the amount of wheat raised in this

35 to 40 bushels per acre are reported

Sherman Eldred and Frank Ellis returned Wednesday from the Klondike,

spread by the transportation companies.-—Mt. Pleasant Times.
A statement just issued by tbe auditor of tbe Ann Arbor road shows that

Cadillac will hold her second annual
free street fair on September 13,34,15

There is likely to be a good deal of
lumbering done in a small way in the
lower peninsula the coming winter.
It will be largely in hardwood and
hemlock, a sort of cleaning up, as It
were, as-it is believed that with the
advent of»peaee tbe lumber business
will take on a decided change for tbe
better.
Charles Jeffords brought in a sugar
beet from bis place just east of the
city, which weighed 3 lbs. 5* ounces,
and when it is considered that they
yet have six weeks to grow, it can be
safely asserted that the venture is going to be a success. Tbe factory at
Bay City will begin taking the crop on
October 1st, and will use 350 tons per
day, and it will take seven or eight
days to consume all raised in this
county.—Mt. Pleasant Democrat.
Purchasers from Kansas and other
states are flocking to Bay county, according to the Bay City Tribune, to
obtain options on farm land for the
purpose of engaging in tbe cultivation
of sugar beets. There is no doubt, if
the sugar industry proves a success,
which is as good as certain, tbat farm
land in Isabellla county will materially increase in value, for it is already
demonstrated that- we can equal tbe
world on the beet product,—Mt. Pleasant Times. Clare county, too,
Judge Wheaton writes describingbis

From there he again rode in a baggage
car to Rookford. He is apparently
feeling better and baa decided to remain at tlie home of Ills daughter,
Mrs, Mills, and take treatment. If
this does not accomplish his restoration, he will go to the hospital for
treatment.—His address is 137 East
street, Rookford, 111,—Mt. Pleasant

ADVERTISING, LIKE FARMING
Must Be Cultivated—Tho Prophet's Name
Was Schneider—Prof. Bryan Was
a Government Scout.
The farmer planted bis crops last
spring and has now gathered i n She
rewara of bis labors. He did not just
plant bis crops, then sit down and
watch them grow, but he cultivated
them, and for his close attention has
received a most munificent reward.
Now is the time for tbe live, wide-awake and bustling business man—no
matter what line of trade he is engaged in—to plant his fall advertising. If you can't attend to and cultivate a ten-acie space take a five, or
even a smaller one, keeping the soil
well turned over, and, like the farmer,
you will receive returns an hundred
fold. Don't wait until all the grain
has been garnered before,you start
your own plow.
m
Sunday school children are reported
to make many funny and remarkable
answers to questions set forth by tbeir
teachers. They may not all be true,
but here is one tbat is, and tbe teacher
who has charge of one of tbe infant
classes at the Methodist church will
yerify it. She asked a little fellow to
name one of tbe prophets. He quickly
replied tbat be was tbe man who
placed the weather flags on the post-
office tower and tbat be thought his
name was Schneider.—Lansing Republican.
A reporter for this paper got into
conyersation with Prof. Bryan, manager Of Bryan's comedians, one day the
first of tbe week and during the course
of the talk learned that they were both
ihLeadyille, Colo., at tbe same time.
Many pathetic incidents of tbe then
new silver"mining camp was called to
mind, together with many laughable
as well as tragic occurrences. The
professor we learn was the first man
to take a covered carriage into that
wild and wooly town and while enroute
there was held-up by what be was sure
were two new hands at the business.
Mrs. Bryan accompanied the professor
on this trip. He was in the government employ for eight years, and at
the time of the Meeker massacre, Jieu
accompanied by Mrs. B., crossed from
Leadville on the old Aspen trail, over
Battle Mountain to Fort Douglas
giying co Mrs. Bryan the honor of being the first woman to cross tbat
mountain, one of the most dangerous
places in those troublous red-skiu
times. They dare not build a fire to
copk their meals—as an Indian could
smell smoke from a white man's fire
ten miles—and at night many signal
fires were discernable from their
camp.. At tbat time the main signal
was generally given from Crested
Butte. Prof. Bryan was also one of
the number who rescued the women
and children after tbe massacre from
Gcronomo's band of merciless Indians
and to effect tbe capture of the entire
baud. Like everyone who was in that
country and are conyersant with the
atrocities committed by these bloodthirsty savages, the professor thinks
tbat the only "good Injun is a dead
one."
