HAPPY XMAS TIME!-
THE GLADDEST HOLIDAY OF ALL THE
■\ EAR, AND THIS YEAR THE GLADDEST OF THEM ALL,
GAY AND HAPPY SHOPPER^
CAUSED CLARE MERCHANTS TO SMILE,
ALL RE?ORT A SPLENDID/TRADE.
Christmas day, 1898,. was certainly
an ideal one. A clear, crisp day under
gray skies In which the spirlb of peace
and good will warmed every heart and
shone in every face. In facb, we had
bhree Ohrisbmas days bhiayear, Saburday, Sunday and Monday. The firsb,
while nob liberally a Xmas. was one in
action,-bhoughb and senbitnent... Sunday was liberally Xmas day—bhe calendar Xmas. Monday was the legal
Xmas day. Three days in which gift-
buying and gift exchanging and cherry greetings, and kindliness, courtesy,
charity aud compassion ruled the human hearb with bender and gracious
sway.
But Saburday was the busiesb day of
all the busy days for our merchants.
Stores were jammed continually to
their utmost capacity, yeb all—bhe
clerks, bhe buyers, bhe pedestrians
and the babies were paticnb and gen-
tle-natured, no harshness was heard,
good-feeling and contenbmenb prevailed and while all were in bhis hau-
py mood ye S-BNTinel s-'cribe thought
ib an opporbune time to visit the merchants of the city to geb their opinion
of trade this holiday season as compared wibh other years, and their
stabemeuts abreviated, are prinbed below:
A. J. Doherby; Largesb business of
and December since 1 have been in
bhe brade.
J. II. Wilson: Very «ood business
indeed, In both store and.tailoring department. ,a
J. F. Tatman: We had a very good
Christum brade.
F. H. Ballinger & Co,: Splendid
trade; bebber than we expecbed.
The Racket: We had a good brade;
didn'b have goods enough to hold oub.
The Bicknell Co.: We have no kick
coming ab all.
Postmasb Kirkbride: The greatest
amount of Chrisbmas packages wenb
through the office this year than probably ever before.
Ab bhe local office of the American
Express Co. they said ib was a "corker."
Holbrook's Departmenb Store: We
had a dandy holiday trade.
J. It Goodman, Pioneer Hardware:
A good Chrisbmas brade, bub even bobber this week.
A. S. Rhoades: Busy? We were too
busy bo think. Trade was alright.
Guess we gob our share, sure.
L. Grathwohl: Had a good brade
ever since 1 moyed back here.
W. Wolsey: Good trade; bebter
than last year.
Davy & Co.: Besb trade we ever
had : sales for December were 10 per
cenb larger than lasb year.
R. M. Mussell: We enjoyed a spleu-
did brade.
Baumgarth Bros.: We are more
than pleased with our immense holiday business.
Van Biunb & Son: Be&ber than previous years. Our baked goods especialr
ly wenb like hob stuff.
W. H. Elden: Bebber bhan lasb year;
my early holiday trade was immense.
E. H. Waller: Good trade; no reason to Complain ab all.
J. H. Schilling: A good brade; better than ever before.
W. T. Davies, successors to E. A.
White, is more than pleased with his
inbroducbionbo bhe way we do business in Clare.
From the above ib is ulain to be
seen bhat the people of Olare and ad-
jacenb points appreciate the way goods
are sold here. Small expenses and the
strong competition our merchants to
undersell any other ciby, no mabber
how large. The varieby of sbores and
the large stocks are second to none and
make Clare a trading point that has
no superior.
Wood Wanted.
We are ready to buy soft 4-ft, cord
wood and will pay 85c a cord tor 100
cords or over, contracts, and Y5o a cord
