THE WIMMING TICKET
REPUBLICANS MEET IN CONVENTION AT THE CITY MALL, LAST
MONDAY EVENING, AND NAME A GOOD, CLEAN TICKET.
Is Made Up of Men who Will Serve the People Well and Faithfully.
Ward Caucuses Also Held—No Better Nominations Were Ever Made,
It is Generally Conceded That the Republicans have Made A No.
Selections on Both City and Ward Tickets.
Vote for the Republican Korainees is a Vote for the
Will Work for the Best Interests of our People."
Len Who
For Mayor—THOMAS S. DORSEY.
>For ClerlC-REMICK G JEtFERIES.
For Treasu-er—DAVID J. FOX.
For Justice of the Peace—A. W. McINTYRE
For School Inspector—A. T. STEVENS.
. Tbe above excellent ticket was
named at tbe republican city convention last Monday evening. It was
named bya large convention, a spontaneous out-pourins of tbe reDresen-
tative republicans of tbe city. It was
the first opportunity tbe believers of
bonest money and good government
bad had to get together sinca tbe magnificent victory hist falls.and they
went to work in tbat convention to
nominate a ticket tbat all citizens,
regardless of politics, can support
witb a clear conscience tbat they will
be doing that which is for tbeir best
interests. That tbey were successful
in their determination goes without
saying.
The meeting was called to order
and Wm. H. Goodman chosen as
chairman and C. H. Clark, secretary.
After the appointing of the tellers the
convention proceeded to the nomination of candidate for mayor. There
was a friendly contest between J. ED.
Galliver, E.. H. Jenney and Ti S.
Dorsey, the latter securing the nomination on the third ballot. Mr.
Dorsey was not a seeker after the
nomination /or mayor, or any other
nomination, and repeatedly, both before and in the convention, as he was
approached by republicann and asked
if be wouli accept the nomination
for mayor, said that be did not want
it/'^lt was not a-case of where.theman
fsougbt the Office, but tbe .office the
man, and inasmuch as it was the will
of tbe whole convention, Mr. Dorsey
feels very grateful for the honor, and,
if elected, will prove to the people
tbat they will never bave cause for
regretting tbe trust they repose in
him. He will be an able and efficient
officer, and wben be goes to Harrison
to act in the capacity of supervisor,
(the mayor, by virtue of his office, being also a supervisor), our people can
feel assured tbat the interests of our
city are being well looked after. He
is not a man to blow and bluster, but
is quiet and painstaking. The way be
works for the people whom he is elected to serve, is evidenced by the manner in which he has performed the
duties of treasurer 'during tbe past
year. _>To previous treasurer ever
made so good a showing, and no treasurer in this whole county returned so
small a percentage of uncollected
taxes as did Mr. Dorsey. When the
people have a faithful public servant
like that they want to keep him,
For Clerk—well, gentle reader,.we're
too modest to speak concerning ourselves. Suffice it to say, that if
elected we will preform the duties of
the office in the rjroper manner. That's
our platform. . • ,
David J, ITox, the republican candidate for treasurer, - for 15 years bas
been a resident of ')lare. He is a laboring man, and a bard working one, and
well qualified for tbe position for which
be has been named. His integrity is
beyond question and no man could be
named wbo is more deserving of the
office. Of course he is not rich in this
world's;goods, but he is rich in all the
necessary qualifications. Vote for him.
For Justice of the peace, Arthur W.
Mclntyreis the nominee. {*Mac" is
not a novice at the justice business by
any.means, having before filled tbe
position to the entire satisfaction of
the people. Dr. Carpenter, tbe opposition nominee, has already had the
office for some time,4 and as both
men are-squally well qualified,-it seems
but just^that tbe honor should pass
around.f
For school inspector the name of
Arthur- T. Stevens is presented.
While the duties of the office are not
very arduous, "Art" is eminently well
qualified for the position and should
any question come up to be settled by
school inspector, '-Art's" judgment
would be found sound.
1st. ward.
For Supervisor—James L. Welch.
For Alderman—O. Falk.
For Constable—James Bollen.
The citizens of the 1st ward knew
"'where they were at" when they renominated James L. Welch for supervisor, and hisrenomination was only
what every one expected. He has
served his waid with intelligence and
self-sacrifice during the past year.
''•Jim'- will be retained as supervisor
for another-year for he is better qualified than he was one year ago to serve
the interests of his ward effectively.
Experience is a teacher without whose
instructions no supervisor can do his
best.
O. Falk is a man with sound judgement and a tax payer and he would
make a good man on the council. He
should be elected.
James Bollen for constable needs no
introduction to the citizens of the 1st.
He has'been their able alderman during the past year.
2nd ¥AED.
For Supervisor—W. A. Goodman.
For Alderman—C. J. Stone.
For Constable—Fred Buell.
The republicans of the 2nd ward
made an excellent choice when they
nominated Will Goodman -for supervisor. On the first informal ballot he
received every vote cast. Will Goodman is a man of ability. His previous
record as supervisor for his ward proves
it and he should be elected this spring.
The voters of the ward know tbat
when be goes to the county capital he
will look well to the interests of bi£
ward and the city. He will never be
found napping.
C. J. Stone will make. a good alderman and is a man who will guard well
tbe city's interests. To know him is
to know tbat he is a good square man
of sound judgment,
Fred Buell is the nominee for constable and will make a good officer. '
3B,DVfABD.
For Supervisors-Wallace S- Cooley.
For Alderman—J. H. Galliver, .
For Constable—H. O. Squires.
The republicans of the 3rd ward were
not behindhand in placing good men
on the ticket. W. S. Cooley for supervisor was a deserving nomination. He
is one of our pioneers, and has ever
been interested in the city's advancement. To say that he is well qualified to be supervisor, but half expresses
it. As the ward assessor he, will show
ability aud will add strength to the
board of supervisors.
J. H. Galliyer would prove an able
margin the council, and would always
be working for the best interests of
the city. He is deservedly popular,
naturally free from prejudice, and capable, considering all questions on their
merits. He would ever aeb as common
sense and good judgment dictate and
should be elected.
H. O. Squires for constable is another
old pioneer and one who needs no introduction and can be relied upon to
preform his duties all right.

ELECTION NOTES.-
Be sure to register.
Tomorrow is registration day.
There are three tickets in the field
in Sheridan township, the People's,
Union and TJn-party.
There is not a man named on the
Republican ticket wbo is not. fully
qualified for the place for which he
was named.
The voters of Grant township will
vote on the proposition to raise by
taxes $400 for the purpose of erecting
a town hall, building. The'site is already owned.
James S. Boyd, who was nominated
for alderman in the third ward, at the
"union" eaucus,has declined to accept
the nomination and the name of Harve
Bitter has been put on for that position. •
Out Of 14 nominations made in the
city this spring by both parties the republicans have three on their ticket
who formerly-jvere prohibitionists and
the democrats have two who formerly
were prohibitionists'. *
Voters will have two ballots, to vote
this year, the one ballot 'containing
the state and county officers to be
voted formal so the two constitutional
amendments, and tbe township or
ward nominations, as the case may
be, on another ballot.
Vernon Republicans have placed
'in nomination one of. the very best
tickets ever named in- that township
by any party, John Duncan is the
candidate for supervisor,, A. J. Clute
for clerk, and,Dave McPhall for treasurer. The entire ticket is a strong one.
Harrison Cleaver:—A.. W. Tibbits,
Of this city, very graciously declined
to accept the nomination of county
school commissioner on the demo-free-
silver-pop ticket very'recently. The
office seems to go begging in that party,
as defeat is staring them in the face.
Heretofore Clare bas had three parties, but last fall when the prohibition
party disorganized, about two-thirds
of them returned to their old home,
the republican party. And every man
tiamed-op the republican city and ward
tickets is a true blue republican and
worthy of the support of all members
of that party.
The most important amendment to
the constitution to be voted on this
spring is that relative to the salary of
W:^.
attorney general.- It proposes to increase his salary.to $3500,, and "then, to
require him to live at Lansing and devote bis entire time to the duties'pf
tbe office. It is quite generally con-'
ceded that the change will be a saving
to the state, ^o other salaries are affected by the proposed change.^
The official ballot provided 'for tbe
state and county election this spring /
contains seven state tickets, republi-'
cao, fusion-democrat; , prohibition,,
straight-democrat, people's party, socialist-labor party and "liberty, party.; .
each with its definite.emblsm or .vignette, with the tickets appearing on
the official ballot in the order named;"
The ballot '.also contains two sta'-ie.
constitutional amendment proposi-- \
tions, relative-to the salary of the attorney general and to the provision,
for a board of auditors'.for Kent}.
county. ' - - - ■ ■ - '
There is a total of l4'no'mipationsoa ,
the republican ticket this.spring. Of.
these 14, eleven bavealwajs been republicans and never voted any other-
ticket. The other three have been*
prohibitionists, but have voted ,*an<_i.
worked with the republican'party for-
honest money and good government-
since before the election pf last- fall- .
Theplacing-of these* three ex-ptohibi--.
tionists on the republican ticket was;-,
an honorable thing to do as tbe vote? *
of last fall shows that two-thirds, of'
the prohibition "party cast their lot •
with the republicans.
There is not a man on the republican.,
ticket that has carried his politics un.---
der a cloak, so to speak, but has' beens-
open and above board and, had- they"
courage to stand by his convictions...
The,slur that is being cast that sc>_oe- :
of them are'office seekers is to silly for
any consideration, whatever.- -The
falsity o*f such a statement can be veil
understood when it is known-tnat one •
of- tbe'eandidates on the republican*

it was against his convictions and h& ■'.

spect of all, regardless of politics,.
