ONCE MORE, HURRAH
REPUBLICANS OF MICHIGAN
MARCH TO VICTORY AT
THE POLLS.
AND JUDliE LONG'S MAJORITY
WILL ALMOST IF NOT QUITE
EQUAL McKIN LEY'S.
SILVERITES ELECT AN OFFICER HERE
AND THERE, BUT SEEM TO BE LOSING WHAT LITTLE GRIP THEY HAD.
CLARE COUNTY ROLLS UP A SPLENDID
MATORITY FOR THE GRAND
OLD PARTY.
THIS CITY, WHICH WENT FOR BRYAN
AND SILVER LAST FALL, NOW
GOES REPUBLICAN.
-■ It was too much to. expect tbat
Michigan's phenominallv large majority for Major MeKinley last November, would be duplicated this spring,
but the popocratic silverites insisted
upon conducting the campaign on national issues, just to show how _ they
were gaining strength with the people
day by day. The republicans welcomed
the call to arms again and went forth
to battle, proud to maintain their
party principles and eager to demonstrate that the people had had their
fill of Bryanism.
Republican 'victory was sure but tbe
most sanguine did not dare to hope
that, at a spring election when there
is always a great falling off in the total vote cast, the majorityover the demo-silver-union- anything- to- get-there
combination, would.be more than 30,-
000, if it went that high.
But the people seemed bent on ad
ministering as severe a chastisement
as possible to the silver forces, and
rolled up a majority for the republican candidates, many thousands greater than was ever before given at a
spring election.
Wayne county did nobly last fall,
but her republican majority on Monday breaks the record.
Bay county, which was overwhelmingly for Bryanism in November, now
gives the republican ticket 1200 majority.
Jackson county broke away from
her republican moorings in the presidential election, but came back again
last Monday witb a good majority for
Judge Long.
The.pops carry twelve out of eighty-
three counties this spring, as .against
seventeen last fall, and tbeir majorities in almost every instance are smaller now than before.
And so it goes. In several instances
silver candidates for mayor were elected on some local issue, but tbe same
towns usually show good republican
majorities on the remainder of the
ticket and substantial gains for tne
republican party.
The local leaders of the Bryan idea
are bard put to explain the tremendous drubbing whicb they received,
their claim being that many of their
voters were too ignorant to know how
to vote, and so contributed to the republican landslide. This opinion, however, does not seem to be shared by
anyone else.
It is interesting and profitable to
study the election returns from the
city of Clare, comparing them with
former elections.
This spring the candidate on the republican ticket receiving the lowest
number of votes, received more than
did the bighest republican candidate
one year ago.
It will be admitted on all hands
that a pretty stiff' campaign was put
up by Clare republicans last fall and
eyery available vote was cast, but
Bryan carried the city by 27. This
spring the republicans wipe out this
majority and show one majority for
Judge Long. The question of silver
did not enter into the contest over the
citv offices. Mayor Rorison was a tower
of strength to bis ticket and it was
his popularity more than anything
else, which pulled his associates
through. The Sentinei- has no tears
to shed over the result, although it regrets tbe defeat of any portion of the
republican ticket. Again the republicans have been shown that the opposition are ever* ready to coax them into' voting against republican candidates, but are never willing to vote
against tbeir own men. It wiJl do
some^good if republicans who, out of
friendship, gave aid and comfort to
the enemy, will now listen to the
sneers and jibes which come from the
leaders of the popocratic forces. A
pull all together, and the republicans
of this city can elect their whole ticket, instead of only a part of it. and we
believe that the next time we try it
we wili prove the truth of this proposition.
But, taken ail in all, the result of
Monday's election was glory enougb
for one day and republicans will continue to rejoice over the substantial
gains which they have made in city,
county and state, and in this second
overwhelming rout of the silver forces.
