A prosperous farmer in north-east
Yernon stole a sheep from G-. H. Hersey, but gave it up with $10.30. He
says he won't deal in sheep- any more.

Clare's streets were crowded with
teams and people from early morn till
late at night, Saturday. The sight
compelled a prominent business man
from a neighboring town to remark
that such a crowd would drive the
business men of his place crazy. Such
crowds are a common occurrence in
Clare and the people are trading, too,
Mt. Pleasant Tribune: A company
of the most intimate friends of Mr.
and Mrs. Joe Horning gave them a
surprise party on Monday night at the
home of T. Horning, where they were
staying preparatory to move to Cop-
emish. A pleasant, social evening
was passed, during which a delicious
lunch, provided by the guests was

Dr. Mulder received a visit over Sunday from his mother and brother of
Laignsburg,. Mich.
A. Bump has been quite sick for several days past, but is improving under
tnecare of Dr. Carpenter.
T.' A. Johnson, founder of the Central Michigan Times at Mt. Pleasant,
was gored to death by a bull on his
farm near Alma, Saturday night.
John Imerman has bought H. Saperston's entire stock of Pingree & Smith's

The trial of the People vs. Lank
Whitney, for keeping a house of ill-
fame in Clare, was held Monday, before Justice Roekafellow. The case
was adjourned until December 20th.
The aspect of the case looks dubious
for Mr. Whitney, and it is to be hoped
that tbe work of routing out these
dens will continue.
W. P. LewiSj the manufacturer of
the favorite and popular "Calkins"
cigar, has placed on the market a 5c
cigar that is found to be as great a

The proceeds of the entertainment,
"Imogene, or the Witch's Secret,"
which is to be played at Doherty opera
house, next Wednesday evening, December 18, will be placed in the hands
of the charity committee, which is
composed of one or two members from
each church of the city, who will see
that the money raised from the entertainment is wisely used. The Kirkbride orchestra wiU furnish-music for
the occasion,
There was a flag raising at theHinkle
school on Friday last. The usual exercises were given by the pupils,
under the supervision of their teacher.
Miss Maggie Gardner. Addresses were
made- by Mrs. M. D. Davis, J. H.
Gardner and others. There "was a
good attendance of patrons and considerable interest was manifested in
the proceedings. Among the visitors
from Clare were Mr., and Mrs. Gard-
ner, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Buckious, Mrs.
M.D. Davis, Mrs. O. Friedeborh, H.
Brown and W.-S. Cooley.. •

A woman accidentally dropped into
her husband's office one day and discovered him using one of her biscuits
as a paper weight, The neighbors say
the suspense is dreadful.
Jo Larook, who was arrested and taken before Justice Fishley of Yernon
for stealing cornstalks, was acquitted
Wednesday by a jury in "five minutes.

Mrs. Chase went to Marion last Saturday, Mr. Chase having moved their
household goods there because of his
business interests taking up the greater part of his time there. Clare people
will regret to lose Mr. and Mrs. Chase
and family.
As a result of the bankers asking for
it Michigan now gets her Hew York
and Hew England mail about fifteen
hours earlier than formerly. The cars
run from Buffalo to Detroit though
Canada over the Michigan Central
with working crews, which has never
before been done. Michigan mail also
goes east in the same way and thus we
iare brought closer to the great metropolis.
.An important change will oe found
m the new election law, which voters
should keep in mind. Paragraph 10,
section 24, provides that where a person takes his meals in one ward and
sleeps in another, the place where he
sleeps shall be his residence, for purpose of registration and voting. Under the old law it was the place at
which he tookhia meals that constituted his place of residence,—Ex.

The Masonic Fair at betroit is said
have been one of the grandest successes of modern times. It is not more so
however, than all things the Masons
of Michigan undertake.
Its an old saying that there are two
things in this world which we are all
sure of—death and taxes, and you will
be forcibly reminded that there is
truth in the saying when you call on
Treasurer Dorsey at his marble works.
The publisher of the Sentinel is
the recipient of twenty-five volumes
as rapidly as issued, of the record of
the Union and Confederate a navies
during the war of the Rebellion. We
prize them Ivery much and ex-
lend thanks to Congressman Avery for
same.
The Oddfellows will give a social
dance at Doherty opera house* on
Christmas night. It promises to be a
very enjoyable event. Firstclass music
has been secured, and the D. of R's
will serve an excellent supper. Bill,
$1.for the evening.
The stockholders of the Clare County
Savings Bank have chosen the following officers for the ensuing year: President, C. W. Perry; vice president,
W. Wolsky; 2d vice president, Joseph
Hudson; Cashier, C. H. Sutherland.
The board of directors will consist of
the officers named and R. H. Jenney.
The workmen of A S. Light & Co.,
Saginaw, are putting in the heating
apparatus in the new Union depot this
week. It is* expected that the depot
will be ready for use about the first of
the year. The F. & P.M. section of
the building will be lighted by electricity, but the T. & A. A. will not, we
understand.
Gladwin Record: Rev. A. H. Coors
writes from Clare that he will be here
next week to assist in conducting the
revival meetings which are in progress
at the M. E. church. The meetings
have been held for the past three weeks
and a deep interest is being felt. It is
intended to hold the meetings allnext
week.
One evening last week a jolly party
of young people of this city went out
to the Brewer farm and enjoyed a fine
oyster supper, and Monday evening of
this week a company of twenty-four
took a sleigh ride out to John Duncan's in Vernon, enjoying another oyster supper. All had a merry time,
Harry Galliver. the popular F. &P.
M. agent at Clare, has a number of fine
large maps of^ the world, neatly framed which he*is going to put in each
room of the city school, and also in the
schools in the country surrounding
Clare. The maps are perfect in every
particular, and will not only serve as
a means of advertising the popular F.
& P.M. and Canadian Pacific roads,
but will be of great educational advantage to the pupils of the schools in
which they will be placed. /
