seems hardly proper that a man who
has been declared insane should bo
permitted so much freedom, without
at least an attendant. No matter
what frightful act an insane man
may commit, he of course cannot
be held responsible. Who then
would be responsible in case of some
tragic performance, insanity having
been publicly announced—the

Bemarks Pertinent and Impertinent Concerning Them.
The new year ushered in a new
administration of Clare Co. affairs.and
no great stir was occasioned when
the change took place. The official
roster is much the same as heretofore, the only change of importance
being in the office of Sheriff,
Thomas If. Lavery of Harrison,
(find by the way all the incumbents
but one are residents of the county
seat) is the lucky man who heads
the lift., being the successor, to Geo.
W. Graham to the Shrievalty. Mr.
Lavevy owes his election to tlie mistake the fusioniste made in failing to
renominate Sheriff Graham. The
campaign had not progressed far
when the knowing ones admitted
the error, but instead of giving up
they devoted themselves all the
more energetically to the election of
their candidate, Arthur E. Doty of
Greenwood. Mr. Doty'■•.«. political
career had been a checkered one, be
having been a democrat, republican
ami greenbacker in turn within a
very few years. Two year."- ago he
was a prominent delegate to the re
ship where his party had a majority
of 138, Mr. Burritt was snowed under by 79 majority. Ho accepts the
situation and doesn't indulge in any
great amount of crowing over his
great democratic victory. As a public prosecutor Mr. Burritt has beetl
earnest, careful and firm, and in tha
prosecution of the scoundrel Carr he
never wavered. For these reason^
he was successful.
With the coming of the new year
these gentlemen assume relations tothe public that are either new ot
freshly renewed. The Press hopes
that upon Jan. 1, 1SSJ), only a good
report can be made of each and all of
them, and wishes them in all things
a happy new year.

number necessary in. the triangular
contest. Thomas H. Lavery got as

of this week the case of Hinkle vs. White

above stated being admitted Mr. Wheaton moved to dismiss the case on the
ground that Bathburn having sold tho

this is a new point in law and the decision will bo awaited with interest. Referee Woodruff denied the motion and an
appeal was taken to tho Circuit Court.

informs the St. Louis Leader that it was
in error in saying last week that Carr
had been granted a new trial. Arguments in tho case are to be heard in the

the court grants the new trial asked for,
the case will be sent back to this or somo

thinks tho new trial will not bo granted.
The Pbess has learned of many small
boys in Clare who carry revolvers, and
calls the attention of parents to the fact.
Ono youngster about fourteen years old
while coasting on the hill tho other evening, became angry at some slight annoyance and threatened to "pump cold lead
