were in Clare Monday on their way to
attend Circuit Court.
There isn't an idle man in Clare and
there is plenty of work for lots more as
fast as they come. And they are co luing
—new ones every day.
Having teeth pulled is a pleasure which
many of our people have enjoyed in connection with a visit to Mt. Pleasant last
week. For a nickle the teeth came cheap
aud painless.
Mrs. A. H. Hunter of East Saginaw
was in Clare Saturday called here by the
illness of her neice, Miss Gertrude Mur-
dock. Mrs. Hunter was the guest of
Mr3. J. C. Bockafellow.
A, Beebe started on Tuesday for Cali-

and superintendent of a mine located by a
relative of his and said to be a very valuable one. Mrs. Beebe will not go on to
join him until fall.

At the next meeting of the common
council an ordinance will probably be
proposed prohibiting the throwing of manure from livery barns and of other refuse matter into the creek. The practice
ought to have been stopped long ago, and
especially so now, in astnuch as the water
from tho creek goes into yards all over
town. The health of the people is of
more importance than the convenience of
one or two citizens. .

''Saily" Feighner paid a visit to Mt.
Pleasant the other day and was accosted
on the streets there by a Mend who inquired what brought him over. "Well
I'll tell you." said the gentleman from
Olare, "I had to have a rest*. Everything
is booming over our way and I haven't
been able to sleep for a week; so I had
to tear myself away and got into some
country village to rest up." This was
considered pretty good and it didn't cost
"Saily" a cent for cigars and buttermilk
while he stayed in town.

Farwell will have two saloons the coming year.
Joe McKee has left Harrison to live in
Van Bnren county.
Business at the county treasurer's office has been brisk for a week or so past.-
,Those rod cards come high.
The Harrison board of water commissioners proposes to make water takers pay
for water whicli they permit their neighbors to use.
George Cummins is tho Clare county
deputy game warden. If George's family
isn't kept supplied with wild goat meat
now it wont be his fault.
The supervisors have ordered the jail
yard fenced in. This will'make it difficult for crooks to hold conversation with
their chums behind the bars.

The calendar for tho May term of the
Circuit Court which convenes next Monday has seven criminal and fifteen civil
cases. Tho Can- cases and the Loomis-
Lyons case aro the most important,' ou

The Midland Bepnblican say that at
Bear-Ion's storo in Meredith, they havo
one of the most remarkable coons in tho
country. It has only two legs, walks on
them like a man, has a mustache, jand in
many respects looks aud acts like a man.
The Begister says that on the occasion
of a recent visit to Farwell. Judgo Wheaton talked himself hoarse on tho railroad
question. The Bogister also says that
they have not expected to get the T. & A.
B. B. but that they propose to have the
Toledo and Cadillac railroad. All right,

From the Attorney General's report for
1886 we learn that there were 68 critain-
4il oases prosecuted in this county last
yearr and fifty five convictions secured.
Eleven prisoners wero sentenced to the
Local Lore.

aggregating $306 were imposed, three
cases were nol. pros'd, one prisoner escaped, one was acquitted, and three eases .are

An interesting program has been arranged for tho meeting of the Clare county teachers' association at Harrison next
week Friday and Saturday. County
Treasurer Averill will deliver an address
of welcome which Prof. Farrel of Farwell
will respond to. Miss Gertie Murdock
of Clare is down for a paper on **Lang-
uage Lessons," and it is hoped that she
will have recovered from her illness so as
to perform the part assigned. Mrs. Carrie Eaton of Clare will read a paper on
"Primary Methods," a subjoct which she
is abundantly qualified to discuss, and
Prof. Wood will talk about "Methods in
Arithmetic." Secretary Cummins of the
board of examiners is expected to tell
what he knows about associations and
their uses. Superintendents Cornell of
Harrison, Walbridge of Evart and Far-
rell of Farwell, besides mony others of
the successful teachers of this county,
will take part in the exercises.

looking toward the taxing of druggist for the sale of liquors, when sold
exclusively for medical and mechanical purposes, was circulated in Clare
this week and signed by nearly
every business and professional man.

that from letters received from his
brother, Jno Giberson, of Chase, he
learns that his brother has decided to
remove to Clare, and that himself
and family will arrive in a couple of
weeks. We are glad Mr. Giberson appreciates the prosperity of our village
and hope ho will never regret his removal to Clare.
Wm. H. Elden is constantly receiving new goods, and at present is
better prepared than ever to meet
the demands of the public for anything ia his line. He carries a full
stock of stationary, wall paper, toys-
and in fact everything that is to bo
found in a first class notion store. He-
is also agent for the best sewing
machines in the market
Sheriff .Rockafellow of Oscoda county was robbed a few clays ago of
$560, funds belonging to the town of
Elmer. He left the money in his
overcoat pocket when ho retired,
and in tho morning it was gone. He
found the pocket-book in the road
emptied of its contents. Sheriff
Bockafellow is a brother of Supervisor Rockafellow of this village.
Three years ago A. F, Smith was
the cbiefest dude among Michigan's
rollerskaters. When the craze died
out in this state Smith moved to
Manitoba, where he ancl his brother
managed a rink. Tho two fell iu
love with the same woman, and she
decided in favor of the brother. A.
F.then killed his brother, the woman
committed suicide the same night,
and Smith gave himself up. He has
just been sentenced to ten years in
the penitentiary.
