A certain Clare lady, not so very
long ago, while eating bologna, found
that it contained among other things,
dog's toe nails. Moral: "Don't eat
bologna."
The people of Evart and vicinity are
doing their share towards relieving
the destitute of the upper peninsula.
This week they shipped a car load of
clothing, etc.
David Wood of Sheridan has been
allowed a pension at $80 a month with
a back pay since June, 1892. The
pension is well deserved and will come
JSery acceptable.

out in splendid holiday attire, printed
on fine pink tinted paper. A creditable job.
I. Saperston has closed out his stock
at Coleman and has now opened up
there with a larger business in larger
quarters^and tbe firm now advertises
as "Saperston Brothers."
Owing to an over sight a very interesting grist of items from our West
Yernon correspondent were omitted
from last Week's issue. .We shall try
and not let it occur again.
Mrs. Dr. Kelley of Farwell and son,
Eugene, visited with Mrs. Dan Grouse
in Clare, last Saturday, while on their"
way to Harrison to spend JSew Years
with Mrs. Kelley's- sister, Mrs. Dr.
Bracey.
Farwell Eegister: W. S. Keifer, of
Ithaca, is lumbering on sec. 29 of 18-6.
He' is running a crew of 20 men and
will put in 1,000,000 feet of hemlock.
The logs are on the T. & A, three
miles south of Lake George.
Tuesday, following Christmas Mrs.
J. W. Calkins of Clare and P. Oallam
of Bussell received word 6f the death
of their brother-in-law at Saginaw, and
onMonday of this week they were
summoned" to Saginaw to attend the'
funerai'of a sister.
It is to be hoped, that 1894 will deal
*more leniently with and act more
'kindly towards the people of this nation than did 1893. And yet \?ith so
many years of prosperity as this country has had, it seems wrong to complain about a little adversity.
Miss Anna Carrow has returned to!
her school at Atwood, Antrim county,
having spent the holidays with her
parents in Sheridan. She was accompanied on her return by Miss Edna Elden who will take charge of the primary department of the Atwood
school. •
A printer on a Georgia ^weekly recently, in making up the forms for the
first time, got a marriage and a grocer's notice mixed up so as to read as
follows: "John Smith and Ida Onay
were united in the holy bonds of sour
kraut, which will be sold by the quart
or barrel. Mir. Smith is an esteemed
cod fish at ten «ents, while the bride
has many hams at a shilling a pound."
Earl Austin returned "Wednesday
from an absence of a year and a half
in the west. He has been over much
of the west and expressed a preference,
for Salt Lake City. He was taken
sick in Chicago on-his way home about
six weeks ago, and for some time was
dangerously ill. Earl is the same old
sixpence.
It will be noticed by new T. A.A. &
IS. M. time card,that Clare peoplehave
now only one train a day each way over
the road, while south of Mt. Pleasant
trains run same as formerly. There;
is a good; deal of justifiable kicking!
among Qlare business men concerning;
this change, and there is talk of taking away all freight traffic and passenger-travel unless a change ifor the
better is made,
Cashier Woodmancy, of the L. L.
-Co., at Dodge, assisted by G.W.Benyx,.
of their Lansing office, last week closed
up the books at the end of theconcern
for the year. Transactions covering
over $525,000 were gone over and books
balanced upon the first footings. Ifc
was certainly a remarkable; circumstance, and indicates plainly that Mrr.
Woodmancy's enviable reputation as
an accurate and (Systematic book-keeper is worthy of full credit.—Cleaver.

crowded with skates every day. and all
the old boys around town who; havn't

Prof. Dave Landau, of Bay City, a
cousin of EC. Saperston of Clare, is expected in Glare sometime during the
coming week for the purpose of organizing a dancing school. A good many
have signified their intention of joining the class.
The exhibits have all been j-emoved
from the world's fair grounds'and the
-?ates thrown open for free admission,
nothing bat the buildings and grounds
remain but the fascination of the
famous fair may be judged from the
fact that in one clay JO.000 people went
to see the empty buildings.
Bev, S. A. Long gave his hearers an
appropriate and edifying sermon last
Sunday morning. His text, 90th
Psalm and 12th verse, "So teach us
to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." All present were convinced of the vanity of
the knowledge of this world without
the wisdom referred to in the text.
The Plj'mouth Mail publishes this
for a true story: "A farmer up in
Clare county lost about' ten,' dollar's
worth of chickens a few nights since,
by thieves, and he was very mlad about
it. Shortly afterwards he found a
pocketbobk containing $80 winch tlie
thieves had lost, and he is. feeling

Last Monday evening while the
Calkins house bus was standing at the
