THE OFFICIAL COUNT.
Canvassers Met Tuesday—Oeacriptioin of

—Tlie Table of tiie Official Vote a good.
Subject for Study. *
Pursuant to law, the county board
of canvassers met at Harrison, Tuesday, and were called to order by county clerk, Bichmond, at 11 o'clock, but
adjourned till 1 o'clock to allow absent
canvassers to arrive. They reconvened
at 1 o'clock and EL H. Bogue of Harrison was elected chairman of the board.
There were present canvassers as follows: Arthur, Wm. Wood; Franklin,
Ed Hawes; Erost, Chas. Scott; Grant,
Geo. S. Leach; Gleenwood, W. Hosier;
Hamilton, (not represented;) Hatton,
John Gordon; Hayes, C. W. Smith;
Bedding, Fred Wait; Sheridan, John
Hampton; Summerfield, Jonathan
Green; Surrey,. B. B. Wait; Winter-
field, Miles Davis; Clare—first ward,
M. "D. Davis; 2nd ward, James O'Connor; 3rd ward> Wm. Boss; Harrison,
1st ward, H. Bogue; 2nd ward, not represented; 3rd ward, P. E. Witherspoon.
Committees were appointed consisting of two members each on the several counts, that is, two on the vote for
Justice of the Supreme Court, two on
the vote for Circuit* Judge, etc. Most
of the records were taken from certificates; some from the book provided for
that purpose and in some cases from
the original tally.sheets. It was surprising to note the incomplete and
careless manner in whieh the returns
were sent to the board. It is no wonder any longer that at least 100 ballots
were thrown out as not voted properly
when officials can not make the returns properly after the ballots are
cast. Below we give a table showing
the result of the canvass:

The New City Council. -
The last meeting of the old city
council occurred Wednesday evening
of last week. The chief business was
the auditing of bills, reports of committees and the canvassing and declaring of the vote on city and ward
oSces. The bills relating to election
amounted to about SI2.25 for the city.
The treasurer's report showed 1jhat
after outstanding grders were paid
there would be about 82500 on h|nd,
as against SMOG a year ago and $1.50
two years ago. . .-jl
The retiring council, of which Md.
Welch was re-elected and Aldermen
Smith and Muscott hold over, d^& a
good year's work. If the new council
does better it will have to strike a
lively gate and keep it up. Besides
paying several debts of the previous
year, a new bridge was built across; the
Tobacco river, the county lin^ road
west was made and a large amount of
side walk was built, although most of
it was charged to lot Owners, and yet
the tax levied was somewhat less than
for the previous years.
There is plenty of work awaiting
the new council, which is composed of
a business-like lot of men, mayor and
all. Besides a lot of street improvement, especially on McEwan from 5th
to State, removing that disgraceful
mud-puddle two blocks long, there
should be some effort made toward a
plan of sewerage. There are many
other works of public improvement
that will doubtless be brought forward, but two or three comprehensive
plans well carried out will prove more
satisfactory.
Wreck on the Greenwood
. • Branch.
(Harrison Correspondence.)
A bad wreck occurred on the Greenwood branch 4 miles west of Harrison^
Wednesday. Engine 76 was coming
down a grade with ten loaded cars of
logs, when the engineer ^discovered a
laerge tree across the track.. He immediately set the brakes and then, together with the fireman, jumped from
the engine. On striking the tree the
engine left the rails and ran down an
embankment onto the woods, turning
over on her side and half burying herself in the loose soil. The engine and
first cars were badly smashed up. Fortunately no one was injured.
The total vote of the city of Harrison was Wlx total vote of the city of
Glare was 276; of the co,oiity, 1174.
