Port Austin, Huron county, Monday

The Christmas exercises at both the
M. E, and Congregational churches were
very appropriate as well as quite elaborate. The presents were numerous and
in many instances quite expensive.
Mr. "William Jerred, of Sheridan, township, wa§ one of the first to ■ renew his

new year. He came in bright and early

There will be a children's meeting at
the iTree Methodist church next Sunday

Wm. Dwyer returned to his home -in
Clare Christmas, having been absent for
the past two months at Bayfield,: Wis., in
the emploj'* of Brigham & Musseli. Sickness necessitated his return. ,
John McKinley, who for the past four
or five years has been making his home-
in southern Minnesota, returned to Clare
last week for a couple of months- visit
with his parents and old friends in this
vicinity.
Mr. and Mrs. E. -B. Moseman were
guests at the Bancroft, East Saginaw,
Christmas night. Their visit to the city
wm for the purpose of witnessing the
comedy, "A Postage Stamp," at the
academy of music,"
The matter of organizing a-stock company and building an. opera house should
not end in mem talk. The Democrat
believes that it would be a paying investment, a'nd besides it -is'- something
that is- badly needed in Clare.
A light fall of enow prevailed yesterday ; not sufficient to make good sleighing, but enough to coax out a few bobs
having wide runners. It makes lumbermen more cheerful, but they -are still
praying for an a'diitional'quantity of the

While in East Saginaw'Wednesday we
met James "Neville who informs, us that
he has secured a position as brakeman on
log and special trains on the Mint & Pere
Marquette railroad, and that he is con-
lemplating the removal of-his family
from Clare to East Saginaw.
Mr. Giles Boss, .who has been visiting
with his son, William, and many friends
in Glare for the past three or four weeks,
returned to his home at Highland Monday to spend Christmas - with his good
wife. May he come again soon and stay

An Arthur contributor states that there
is a girl living close to the line of that

The dance -given by the fire boys at the
town hall Monday evening was yery
largely attended, and would have passed
off more pleasantly had not the disturbance oeeured In the early evening between the managers and some of tne boys

The music by Prof. Stic&ie'S orchestra of
five pieces was the finest ever rendered
in Glare. The firemen netted a good'y

Mr. and Mrs, D. E. Alward departed
yesterday to be absent until next summer and possibly during the entire year.
Mr, A. went to Lansing to be in readiness to enter upon his duties when the
legislature shall assemble next Wednesday. Mrs. A, went to Battle Creek for a
