Mrs. Clinton. Scbooiiover is very sick.
A. A. Shaver was at Harrison Wednes-
ti an incorporated village ofaabout 1,500 in-
abit&nts, located at the junction of the Flint
'^Fete Marctuette and Toledo, Ann. Arbor &
"Hortn Michigan railroads, and at the southern Mraninus of the Saginaw Valley & Clare
County railroad, a branch running north
throng, this county, owned and operated by
iheF.:<&-P.'M.By. company. Clare is fifty
miles north and. west of East Saginaw, in the
southeast corner of Clare county; geographically speaking, near the center of the lower
peninsula of Michigan. The "mother earth"
upon whieh Clare now stands was, previous
to 2869, an unbroken forest. About this time
people were attracted this way by the valu-
eble timber and rich farming fends, when the
Tillage was founded and th© country surrounding beganto be settled upon. Shortly
after this date the iron horse made its advent
into this section, which added anew impetus
to the development of the country. The village's, growth has not been rapid, but steady
sad "permanent, and is now classed as the
most important and liveliest town in Central Michigan. Today its business may be^
briefly summarized as follows, viz: Three
saw mills, one shingle mill, two plaining
mills, one machine shop, one tannery, one
troodworking factory, a grist mill in course
of erection, one grain elevator, a beef and
chicken extract factory, three churches, a
graded school with four departments, a mod
«rn new union depot, two printing offices, a
large number of .mercantile establishments,
shd the usual number of shops, etc. The
tillage is located in the center of a rich and
prosperous agricultural district, surrounded
by a class of whole-sotiied, honest and well-
to-do tillers- of -the soil. Our business men4

44A Happy "New Year "to vou!•■■' was tho
exclamation addressed by the DE^iocaAiL*
| scribe to D. O. Murdoc.k, of "Vernon, as w©
met that gentleman on the street last;
Tuesday. "What's the news out in your
section of the country?" continued the
Faber pusher.. "Oh, nothing of any Importance-' he answered. "I am so bmy
these days, that I do not have time' So
get around much; beside the one reason
that I take the Democrat is to get all
the news. Qsie fact, though,tJHat I- nsigM
mention: 'Yesterday while elearing 'a
road through the woods I pushed away si
pile of-dry leaves/under some brusjh,
when out darted a streaked snake fully
three feet long, which I speedily dispatched. It is so seldom? that a snake Is
seen in winter that the fact may afford
3'ou news for an item." During the conversation, Mr. S. A. Sutherland stepped
up, and hearing the narrative, spun tv7© <
or three snake yarns for the edification
of the quill driver, winding up with th®
remark -. "•'Speaking of snakes, 'freezing'
up1 in the winter and "'thawing out' agaba
in the spring reminds ine.bf the time th®
Harrison branch was being pushed in to
the north part of this county. " One day
whHe,at" vork on a sand hill near Hnv~"
rison the boys unearthed a chipraimk,tfc@
little animal < being - ap-p'arenciy lifeless
and frozen stiff. Oa going to dinner
someone i^ieked it up, carried it to the
house and Itdd it down near the stcwa,
Before the meal was finished tbe litcHe
animal had Hhawed ouf and was* running
around the house in a lively uiaiiner.n
There, now you have got it at: tbe* **ame
price as did the scribe*, and ©nr- niiiKl Is
considerably relieved.

Shaver was at Harrison Wednes- ti an incorporated village ofaabout 1,500 in- abit&nts, located at the junction of the Flint '^Fete Marctuette and Toledo, Ann. Arbor & "Hortn Michigan railroads, and at the southern Mraninus of the Saginaw Valley & Clare County railroad, a branch running north throng, this county, owned and operated by iheF.:<&-P.'M.By. company. Clare is fifty miles north and. west of East Saginaw, in the southeast corner of Clare county; geographically speaking, near the center of the lower peninsula of Michigan. The "mother earth" upon whieh Clare now stands was, previous to 2869, an unbroken forest. About this time people were attracted this way by the valu- eble timber and rich farming fends, when the Tillage was founded and th© country surrounding beganto be settled upon. Shortly after this date the iron horse made its advent into this section, which added anew impetus to the development of the country. The village's, growth has not been rapid, but steady sad "permanent, and is now classed as the most important and liveliest town in Central Michigan. Today its business may be^ briefly summarized as follows, viz: Three saw mills, one shingle mill, two plaining mills, one machine shop, one tannery, one troodworking factory, a grist mill in course of erection, one grain elevator, a beef and chicken extract factory, three churches, a graded school with four departments, a mod «rn new union depot, two printing offices, a large number of .mercantile establishments, shd the usual number of shops, etc. The tillage is located in the center of a rich and prosperous agricultural district, surrounded by a class of whole-sotiied, honest and well- to-do tillers- of -the soil.
