Best Ticket Ever Presented to Glare County
Voters.
A minority party must nominate
a strong, clean ticket from top to
bottom, if it expects to win, and in
this, the Democracy lias succeeded.
We submit that there is not a weak
spot on it. Lawton T. Hemans for
governor is of the highest *ype of
Michigan manhood. Not one personal attack has been made against
him. He is above reproach. Likewise the whole state ticket. Dr.
Griswold for Congress is loved by
all who know him. Fred Powell for
state senator iu an ideal wan for
the office. He is not a politician,
but a plain business man Oharles
W. Perry for representative is a
man of sterling Integrity and
ability. It will be a happy day for
Michigan when Ave have men like
Mr. Perry in the legislature.
The county ticket i s clean
The Democracy does not
ask republicans to vote for these
men because they are democrats
but because they deserve support
on their merits. They represent
high ideals, clean economical
government and pure politics. Look
over the ticket from top to bottom,
search the records of these men, observe their nobility of character and
sterling integrity, And out what
they stand for, and voto for them
on their merits if you think they
deserve your support. We appeal
to republicans in the name of
citizenship to cast aside partisanship and vote for the best men, regardless of parly. That is a fair
appeal addressed to those avIio
wish to be fair.
Charles W. Perry of this city for
representative is a man of sterling
integrity, 'eminent ability and if
elected this district will have a
representative in tlie legislature of
whom the whole state may well
feel proud. He has lived in Clare
county for thirty years. He is one
of tlie leading lawyers of central
for Judge of Probate, is eminently
fitted for the discharge of the duties
of the office. He has lived In Clare
county for 34 years, and served ns
Justice of the peace for 8 years.
So great is the public confidence in
his judgment that most cases are
left to him for decision, a jury
seldom being; called. .Several of his
oases have been appealed to the
Supreme court but lie has never
been reversed either in Circuit or
Supreme court. He has exceptional
clerical and judicial ability and is
throughly grounded in the law. He
represents some of the largest insurance and fidility companies in the
country. His opponent has had the
honor of the office fori years, which
Is equal to two terms of any other
county office. If elected to this
office Mr. Maynard will give his
entire time to the discharge of its
duties and will be at the court house
at all times ready to attend to
business with dispatch.
William W. Harper for surveyor
lives in the geographical center of
the county, and is the best qualified
man in Clare County for this office,
lie has held the position and
proved an excellent officer. Voters
who are land ownes should not forget what a qualified survovor means
to them, The lines of your farms
depend upon his ability and accuracy. An error may cost you hundreds of dollars. Do not let party
PoU'iM govern your vote. Vote for
Mr, Harper and you will vote for
your own interests. He is popular,
accomondating and able,
Michigan and tho dean of the Clare
county bar. He has been identified
with all that stands for business and
agricultural progress. He is not
an office seeker. He did not
tho nomination. It came to
because of his intrinsic woith
pre-eminent qualifications,
would make a fine legislator because
he is a man of constructive states

Joseph E. Ladd of Franklin is
the strongest nominee the minority
party could have made for sheriff.
Joe Ladd is a fearless aud honest
farmer who does his work with conscientious care and diligence. He
is about 45-years old. has lived in
Clare County for 30 years and has
served in many official positions of
trust and responsibility. He served
as city Marshal of City of Clare and
proved a fine 6fficer, inpartlal aud
fair. Joe Ladd is popular, because
he is always the same. He would
make as good a sheriff as Clare Co,
ever had, and from reports of support coming to him his electou is
predicted.
The office of Judge of Probate is
a very important one, all land in
the county passing through it on
tho average of about once every
10 years. The duties require a man
of clerical and judicial ability, and
Albert E. Maynard,. the nominee
Ellis E. Hughes, for countv
Tieasurer, is well known to the
people of Clare county, He is a
business man, able, honest and
true, and has by his energy contributed much to Clare county's
welfare. He has lived here for
many years, being twice a candidate
for this office, and defeated
by small majorites. He deserves
eieciion and if elected he will devote the same care to the official
business of the county as ho has
to his personal affiairs and give
his personal attention to it at
all times, aud will make an unexcelled officer.
Dr. David M. Langan of Harrison
for Coroner, is one of the leading
physicians of this county, and is
respected by all who know him.
Kaini and storm have never kept
him back from the home of pain and
sorrow. He has been a friend to
many in distress,—a-man with a big
heart, a ready hand, and keen intellect,—able worthy and true, Do not
forget to give him your support.
John Cameron for coroner. There
is no better man for this position in
the county. He is a plain citizen
with an intelligent head and willing
hand, who does his work with a
conscience, and is just the kind of a
man this office requires. He has
lived in Clare County for years and
those who know him respect him
for his honesty and ability.
Arthur J. »Laty for Prosecutiag-'Attorney wus not a candidate for the nomination, but friends wrote hi3 name on
tho primary ballot and he was nominated. At first Mr. Lucy did not feel disposed to leavs ins name on tho ticket, because he bus i.ln-Ady made three hard
catnpuigns a. d keen defeated by small
mHjontiee and did not feel us if he could
ask Im friends to do more for hitn and
already feels more indebted to tlieui tba&
he can ever repay.
He would like to be elected to this
office, and if elected, would do the work
to the best of bis ability, but will leave
the whole matter to the voters and
friends to decide.
Five terms as city attorney and four
terms as mayor show how Air. Lacy is
regarded in his home city. He was
elected to his fourth term ns mavor by a
vote of 237 to 100. As a candidate for
congress two years ago be and over 8,000
ahead of his ticket.
E. B. Finch is a Clare county
farmer's son, 26 years old, now engaged in the real estate business at
Clare. He is able, and throughly
familiar with abstracting, and
clerical work, and if elected pledges
his faithful undivided service to the
people, Mr. Finch deserves commendation for tbe progress ho has
made.' He has shown to the world
how a farmer's son can make his
way to the top, He has the largest
land list if any real estate dealer lit
central Michigan, representing large
interests; a position of great
trust and responsibility) n"^ the people ought to elect him on Ins merits.
. PHELOKU ROYCE.
Passed to her Reward Sunday afternoon at
the age of Ninety Years. *
At the home of her daughter, Mrs,
A. N, Smith, occured the death of
Mrs. Phelomela Eoyce at the ripe
old age of 90 years, 2 months and 9
days. She has been a patient sufferer for months until Sunday at 6
oclock she departed for the Great

The funernal services were held
from the home the home of Mr. arid
Mrs. a. N. Smith Tuesday morning,
Rev. G. D. Kaufman, of the First
Baptist church officiating, and the

Miss Phelomela Garfield was born
July 2-3,1818, in Alexander, Genesee
county, N. Y. She was the fourth in
a family of eight children, six girls
and two boys, all of whom have
passed to the other life in advance
of her.
Seventy-one years ago she was
united in marriage to her first husband, Elbridge Chapin. To this union were born six children, two of
whom survive: Marshall H. Ohapin, of Vandorbilt, and Mrs. Alrner-
on Smith, of Clare, with whom she
spent the closing years of her life.
Mr. Chapin having died she was
again married to Mr. Boyce.
The deceased came to Oakland
county, Michigan, as one of it pioneers, where she lived until about
seventeen years ago, when she came
to Clare, and has since made her
home here.
At an early age she was converted
aud united with the First Baptist
church at Holly with which she has
since remained a member.
Her life was one of devotion to
her home and family. Always

won for her host of friends. Although her life was crowded.with
trials, ilnd sacrifices, sti'e nevetfTost

the darkest cloud.
