In the northeast part of the township of Yernon some very substantial
improvements are being made that
doesn't indicate very hard times, in
that quarter at least. On 'section 23,
lames Yerrett has just completed a
new roomy and elegant residence,
painted and finished in excellent style.
Chas. Aekerman, on section 12 has dug
a hole in the ground, built a stone wall
around it and collected lumber and
shingles in. large quantities, all of
which indicate that he will soon have a
residence that will be a blessing to
himself and family and a fitting ornament in that very excellent section of
the county. Henry'Orr and Ephraim
Brooks are both finishing large and
excellent barns. Such improvements

EBIEHDS OF THE SE_TTI_TEI<r
We have an obligation soon coming
due, that, owing to the present financial depression, we are not prepared
for and can not get an extension of
time. Itis an imperative necessity
that we have money.
Do you owe us?
If it is on subscription, please hand
us even part of it as even halves and
quarters are mighty precious just now.
If not owing us, here is a great
chance for both of us, (but good for 10
days only:) We will send the S_£_m-.
_n_L, ($1.50), and J-Tew York Tribune,
($1.00), to any address for $1 for one
year! Can you miss it? It is an actual loss to us* but not so great as it
would be not to meet our obligation.
Bear in mind that this offer is for 10
days only! Yours,
--" Paemeb & Jssimioss.

J. C. Bockafellow, Evart, today.
H..Saperston is back from Chicago.
The weather bureau was right—it
rained today.
The state troops are in camp at
Island Lake.
Misses Yera and Othie Smith are
visiting relatives at Manton.
Mr. Tillson is putting up a fine new
house on west State street.
Miss Belle Wetherbe of Saginaw >is
the guest of Miss Maggie Patient. -
A new veranda and fresh paint greatly improve John Cunningham's home.
J. W. Schermerhorn brought home
a prize string of trout yesterday from
a neighboring stream.
Our correspondents have our thanks
for valuable assistance in furnishing
newsy matter this week.
M. 32. Whitney of this city has had
his pension of $12 stopped. Hoke is
trying to make it a "roll of honor,"
you know.
J. W. Calkins has obtained permission from the council to construct a
sewer from the hotel to the creek on
5th street.
Prof. Jos. L_Torthou and family are
visiting friends in and near Clare. Mr.
Iforthon is principal of the East Jordan schools.
A. Cunningham was at the Crusaders' meeting at Mt. Pleasant, Sunday.
He asks us to say that he is going to
be a better man.
John Giberson and family started
yesterday for Casnovia, near Grand
Rapids, for a couple of week's visit.
They drive the entire distance.
Earwell 1, Evart 7, Tuesday. The
latter nine employ a league battery,
which was too much of a handicap for
their opponents. The Earwell pitcher
struck out 17 Evart men.
Rev. L. K. Long, brother of S. A.
Long and pastor of Congregational
church at Otsego, is visiting at the
Congregational parsonage. He is to
spend part of his vacation in Clare

pulpit next Sabbath morning a,nd eveJsT
ing.
A private letter recently received
from J. LEL Galliver says that he is visiting Exeter Eng.with his parents. It's
their old home and nothing has
changed in the fifty years^of their absence. The trip is proving beneficial
to the health of the old people. Ask
Harry if he was sea sick, when he returns.
The best evidence of the soundness
of the country despite the depression
that exists, is the sonfidence that all
business men have in each ofcher and
their willingness not only to extend
credit but to renew obligations that
become due. It is done with a cheerfulness that s .ems to say, we are all in
the soup, wait'till it cools.
Thomas Presley's fine new barn in
Grant township with a large harvest
of hay and wheat just garnered, was
burned Tuesday night between 10 and
1 o'clock. It was doubtless the work
of incendiaries as there was no fire
within a long distance. The loss is a
large one and falls very heavily on Mr.
Presley, as there was no insurance.
Do not miss the "ready print" pages
of the SE_mira__. Although folded
inside they are none the less interesting. Among the interesting things
this week are found the president's
message, account of the silver convention at Chicago, special Washington
correspondence, organization and work
of the special session, beside all the
leading state news. A special feature
is our nearly full page cut of all the
members of the national executive and
legislative bodies.
The following from one of the Reed
City papers of this week will be of
pleasant interest to the many friends of
Mr. Ash in this city: "Will L.Ash was
passing cigars around so freely among
his friends Monday that they began to
suspect somethihg was in the wind.
It was soon learned that he had taken
unto himself a life partner, and she was
none other than Miss Yera, daughter
of George H. Gilbert of this city, and
well and favorably known in the young
people's social circle. It was something of a surprise to the public. They
were married Sunday at the home of
the bride.. Mr. Ash came to this city
from Clare one year ago since when he
has been the popular clerk in Mrs. A.
Jacobson's store and is now engaged
with her successor, Mr.Hyman Joseph.
Mr. and Mrs. Ash will leave in a few
days on a visit to the world's fair.
They have the best wishes of many
Mends." - • r
