The City schools close today, for one
week's vacation. It is intimated that a

The only car load of mixed paint that
ever arrived in-the city all at one time
was unloaded in-front of Doherty's hardware store yesterday.
The roads vvere extremely bad the first
of the week, but the wind and warm sun
have tended to put them, in fairly passable condition at present.
' Henry Alger moved his family this
week into Eobert Corner's house on east
4th street. Mr. and Mrs. Corner, have
moved onto a farm near Mt. Pleasant.

A stranger was heard to remark one
day this week that Clare should have a
beauty show. There is so much loveliness here that it would attract vast multitudes to our city and help out our cash
drawers.
Peter Callam and Mrs. J. W. Calkins
returned home from Mackinaw the first
of the week, whither they went last Friday summoned by a telegram announcing the serious illness of Mr. Callam's
brother.
Considerable talk-was created late last
week by the mysterious disappearance'of
Eobert Baker, a Vernon township farmer, whose whereabouts were unknown
for three or four days. He has returned,
however.
A. J. Doherty accepted an inyitatation
from D. Scott Partridge, manager of the
Mt, Pleasant opera house, to witness the
production of the "Galley Slave" by the
Starr Dramatic tronp at that place- Monday night.
Michigan School Moderator: At a
wonderfully exciting spelling match in
connection with Clare* county institute.

Mr. BufFum is a brother-in-law of Mr.
Giberson and is engaged in the meat business at that place. • . •
The opening dates of Doherty's new
opera house are Monday. Tuesday and
Wednesday, April 6th, 7th and. 8th. The
troupe is one of the best, on the road and
those who attend may expect a rare
treat. Clare people are anxiously waiting for the time to roll 'round.'
In conversing with a Democrat-Press
reporter one day recently, water works engineer H.,0. Squire stated that if there
be an occasion to fight fire the pumps
would do efFectiye work not longer than
twenty minutes. The village council
ordered the water board to repair the
well some weeks ago but no action has
yet been taken. Something should be
done at once.
