Miss Laura Holbrook .commenced a
three months* term of school in Arthur
township on Monday.
Supervisor C. L. Mabie, of Meredith,
was in the city a few hours "Wednesday
on his way east on business.

The boy or girl in Clare who does not
afford either a bicycle nr tricycle is way
behind the times. Nearly all have one.

Harrison, were in the city Monday on
business. They were negotiating for a

a commodious dwelling house well under way on -west State street. He has
moved his;falmly therein.

Monday was a lovely day and the visitors to the city were many.

Otho Sutherland sports a new safety
bicycle and is about the proudest boy
in the city.
Justice Tinker was down from Harri-1
son Tuesday and made this office a
pleasant visit.

Wm. Wolsky went to Detroit Tuesday
afternoon to be absent three or four

The street and yard in the vicinity of
the 7th street M.' E. church are like the
Democrat-Press office windows—would
present a more attractive appearance if
cleaned,
M. E. Whitney went to Linden, Genesee county, Tuesday afternoon for a
few days' visit with his wife, who has
been staying with relatives during the
past, winter.
There is not a very large amount of
maple syrup or, sugar being made in
this vicinity this spring. The bounty
does not appear to be any inducement
to the farmers.
Wonder if base ball will cut much of
a figure in Clare this summer ? The
city has one of the best ball parks in
northern Michigan. Why not resurrect
the old "Whirlwinds ?"
The work on Wolsky's new brick
block will be commenced about the
first of the coming month—as soon as
things can be got in readiness. He expects to have it completed by the first
of August.
Clergymen and -justices of the peace
seem, to forget "that the law requires
them to make a return of all marriages
solemnized by them, to the county clerk
within ten days after the. ceremony has
been performed.
Flint & Pere Marquette Railroad
steamers have commenced running between Ludington and Milwaukee, for
the season. A boat leaves Ludington
daily except Sundays at 10:35 p. m. and
arrives at .Milwaukee at 7 a. m.
According to the Detroit Evening
News, Fred Meyer, -who was sentenced
from Clare county to five years at the
Ionia house of correction, was released
Monday under the indeterminate sentence law. He will be on parole and
cannot leave the state.
Married, on Tuesday, April 14th, at
the residence of the bride's brother,!"^
miles west of Clare, John F. Willey and
Miss Susie Evans, both of this county
and'well and favorably known to a wide
circle of acquaintances—all joining
with the Demoobat-Press in wishing
them happiness and prosperity abundant. Rev. Floyd C. Field was the officiating clergyman.
William Dunham, who resided two
miles northeast of Clfire, dropped dead
about 11 a. m, Tuesday. ■ Heart disease
being the cause of his sudden death.
The funeral was held at the home* of
William Garrison on Wednesday at 3
p. m. and the remains were inturred in
Cherry Grove.cemetery. Deceased was
49 years of age and leaves but one son,
William^to mourn his departure, his
wife having died about one year ago.

The K. of P. band will-give a concert
next week Friday, night, at Doherty,
opera house. An elegant program of
vocal and instrumental music, reciter-
tions and a f arsical play has been arranged. The public' should patronize
them liberally.
Chase & Pierce loaded 30 cars with
basswood logs Tuesday on the main
line of the T. & A. railroad, one mile
north of the city, which were shipped,
to the Mt. Pleasant basket works. They
have about 200 cars more on the railroad, consisting of basswood, oak, hemlock, etc.' „
A merchant remarked yesterday that
farmers were-beginning" to get into' „
town with teams and wagons', .and that
trade was picking up in consequence.
'* Give us a, few more warm days to dry
the mud," he said "and all the merchants will begin to think they are not
in business for nothing."
Miss Bessie Giberson returned from
Detroit Tuesday evening, where she has .
been studying music for the past six
months. She was accompanied by Miss
Hessey, an employe in Mrs. Giberson's
millinery establishment, who has been
spending, a four or five weeks' vacation
with relatives in Canada. \ . *
About three weeks ago Mr. and Mrs..

Brown left Sheridan township; for Ore--
gon, where they "'intended to locate./
Under the date of April 10th Mr. Black
wrote from Forest Grove, Washington,
county, to the Democrat-Press, stating,..
that the party arrived all right and
think that country very nice. H& says,
that flowers are in bloom there. #

moved with his family from Dexter to
this city, securing "fiving rooms in a.
part of Mrs. Wilson's house on east 5th
street. About 1 o'clock Tuesday morning he awoke from'his slumbers feeling-
alittle strangely and thought he would,
get up and procure a drink of water*
He had taken only a few steps when he
fell to the floor. His wife summoned,
assistance, but of no avail, and in ayery
few moments he/ breathed _ his last.
Heart disease is attributed. B[e leaves
a widow and a 2-year-oloi boy baby.
Deceased was born in Erie county^ Pa.,
and was 52 years of age at the time of
death. He was a veteran of the late
war, Company L.r 1st Mich, cavalry.
The, funeral was conducted Wednesday
afternoon at2 o'clock from theM.E.
church by Rev. L. L. Tower. Remains
interred in Cherry Grover cemetery.
The members of W. S.Hancock Post,
G. A. R., were in attendance in uniform.
