Mrs. Al. Ervey and Mrs. O. Bigley have

The supreme court of this state has decided that bard cider come under the

Perhaps never before in Midland were
jugs so freely resorted to as at the Presbyterian church Tuesday evening, but
they were not tha kind that breed snakes.
These ju^s yielded about $60 for the missionary cause and there was great rejoicing. There were appropriate exercises.

Last evening while a large crowd were in
Husted's opera hail to witness the play'
of "Notice to Quit or Ireland as it is,"
by Brown and Tucker, someone raised the
cry of "fire and instantly a rush was mad©
for the stairway.
By the presence of mind of some who
were m the hall a panic was averted,
alth'tf-qgh everyone was anxious to get
out ■ and not very particular how that
was either, as was shown by some of the
men- jumping from the windows down on
the lower' bnilding's and thence to the
ground.
Messrs: Brown '&. Tucker. .inform *us

they are not in the best of condition,

then being frozen.
The firemen turned out in splendid
shape and two streams of water were
playing on'the burrhhg building in less

The fire was discovered to have
caught from the .chimney between the
second and third floors. While the play
was in x^rogress and before anyone
■thought of fire the smoke became so \

could see across, the hall. The smoke

St. Valentine's day was celebrated in a
very appropriate manner in the public

where a post office was erected and fitted
out very nicely., "A sketch of the life and
history of St. Valentine, together with
many facts pertaining to the origin of the
custom of celebrating. the day and of
sending Valentines,, was read by the
principle. An abundance of good music
was rendered on the occasion, and after

The roller skates used on the third

'Chris. E. Ehrhardt, who occupied one
of the stores on the ground floor with a
general provision house got ell of his
stock out in good condition. His loss
will not exceed $100. Chris, moved into
E. H. Bandail's old store this morning
and will be ready for business in a day
or so.
Al. Ervey's billiard pffflor occupied
another, store on the grouad floor. The
billiard tables were moved out, into the
street, and his loss would be fully covered by $50.
O. Beamer and Geo. Lawrence had
saloons in the next two buildings.
Their contents were moved into the
street, and consequently liquor and cigars
to the amount of about $100 were missing this morning. Their loss will reach
$300.
Geo. Brown's barber shop and B, Patient's shoe shop occupied the corner
building. George moved all of his
things into the street, Mr. Patient getting his things ready to move but
thought he would wait until the fire got
a little closer. By so doing he saved
himself the trouble of moving them
back again. Mr. Brown says he will be
ready for business again to-morrow.
H. Orth moved some of his things out,
and up as. far. as Wolsky's they were
ready to; vacate at a momen t's notice.
The loss on. the building, will reach

It is not thought probable now
