That the reason March 4th was selected
as.inauguration day instead of April 30th.
as in case of the first president, George
Washington, is this: After the adoption
of the Federal constitution the old Congress fixed the first day in January as the
day for the states to appoint electors; the
first Wednesday in February as the day
for those electors to elect a President
and a Vice-President and the first Wednesday in March for the President and
Vice-President to take the oath of office.
The first Wednesday in March, 1789, Ml
on the 4th. and hence that became the
day of the beginning of' the.' Presidential
term. Owing to the difficulties in travel
in those days Washington was not inaugurated until the 30th of April, but his
term had comuiencedeott the 4th March.
