Tuesday morning as Albert Smith
and I, D. Smith, bis. uncle, -were at
tvork about tfiree miles north -and
west of town, they had occasion' to
chop down a large tree which lodged
in the top of another. Albert being
more used to such work-at once proceeded to fail the one lodged, while
his uncle was at work Jailing another
near by-. In the tops of this on£ be»
Ing a part of one that had/ lodged
gome time before, and instead of Jailing where he intended, It went in
another direction. Albert seeing it
and also seeing his unele was in-danger, spoke to him to run but for some
reason could not be made to understand what was his danger. As the
tree ne^red the ground he kept urging him to get out of tbe way, but it
is believed he did not see the tree
coming until too late. to save himself. The falling tree striking him
on the head with such force as to
crack his skull, the wound reaching
from near the right temple across the
top of the head near the base of the
skull upon the left side just back of
the ear. ' Had it not heen for a large
log the tree falling across be would
have been buried beneath it. He
was at first thought to be dead, the
blood pouring from his nose, mouth
and ears. He was lifted by his nephew but found too heavy to carry the
distance of nearly 40 rods to the nearest house, but was left while help
could be got, and when on-, returning
he was' found sitting: erect, holding
his crushed head with Ms hands and
asked how be got hurt.
