The board of superintendents of the
poor met in Clare Tuesday and audited
accounts for the month of May to the
amount of $140.21. distributed as'follows:
Poorfaroi. $81.44; Harrison and vicinity,
$38.14; Clare and vicinity, $15.04; Far-
well and vicinity, $5.29. It. is anotica-
ble fact that although Clare and vicinity
has a much more populous territory than
any of the other portions of the county,
under the careful management of superintendent "Newth the expenses are made
much more nominal in accordance.

There Is nothing the American boy enjoys so. much as a chance to. defy some

Is doing something wrong. The Michigan boy, therefore, has a prospect for fun,
if fhjsj legislature puts in the penal code
a law forbiding the sale of cigarettes, to
bofs under .16 years. What fun it will
be for the boys then. Every one of them
will1 have his pockets full of cigarettes
for the sole purpose of smoking before
the officer wl£o has the authority to forbid them from doing so.. The bill might
properly be entitled an act to encourage
small boys to smofce.—Reed City Democrat.
We read In the Clare Democrat that
Elder Cornish of this city—an apostle of
old Joe Smith—has been working miracles among.the people at Coleman, in
Midland county. It is stated that he
baptized a man a few days ago who was
so afflicted with rheumatism that he Could
not walk without the aid of a cane, and
when he came up out of the water he had
no further use for his walking stick and
threw It away. The story is undoubtedly
like that of the finding of the Mormon
Bible, it lacks the * verification - of some
one else besides their own kind to make
others believe it. It was but a few days
before that we read how the people of
ah Illinois town worked miracles among
a few Mormons' who were proselyting
there. One of them was put straddle pi
