We desire to say a few words this week
to our readers regarding the enterprising
firm of Herrick & Harris, who are doing
a flourishing business in the grocery and
provision line at the eorner of Main and
5th streets. Both gentlemen of the firm
are old residents and too well-known to
the people of this vicinity to need introduction .at our-hands. It is their fine,
large stock, and honest, upright and courteous method of doing business to which
we desire to call your attention. If there
is anything in the grocery line of which
you are in need, you may be assured that
you can find it at their store. It will be
of the best quality and you will get 16
ounces to the pound. They are courteous to customers, prompt in catering to
wants and will deliver free within the
village all goods purchased of them.
The manner in which fortunes are
m&de in pine timber by shrewd operators
is illustrated in the recent deals of J. T.
Hurst. It will be remembered that a few
months ago he bought of Whitney &
Stinchfield, of Detroit, 140,000,000 feet of
pine timbei*, tributary to the Tobacco
river, the consideration being, $800,000.
Mr. Hurst grouped the timber and has
sold #650,000 worth pf it to the Saginaw
lumber and salt company and Gebbart &
Estabrook, of this city, and S. O. Fisher,
of West Bay City. He.has 40,060,000 feet
of the choicest timber on the tract left,
which he holds at $8 stumpage, and there
is little doubt but he will dispose of it at
that figure. This will clean up the entire tract at $970,000, >a handsome profit
of $170,000. The Saginaw lumber and
salt company will construct a spur track
frpm Hatton branch to their timber on
this tract and will-cut 10,000,000 or 12,-
000.000 feet of it this summer.—Saginaw
