Lawrence Grathwohl, the tailor, either
lost or had stolen from him Tuesday
night a small, black cheap pocket-book
containing $44 in money. The denomination of the currency was one $10. six

some one entered his room and stole the
money from, his pocket during the night

Last Friday was an unlucky day for C.
W. Sterns. Late in the afternoon he let
several of his livery horses out that they
might graze around the barn for a few
hours. They strayed over onto the railroad find the 6;15 passenger train killed
one of his matched grey team. Two of
his black drivers were badly crit about
the legs and breast bj^ running, into the
the barb wire fence along the track. He
probably cannot recover any. damages
from the company.

Another attempt to manufacture brick
is about to be made in this village. The
projectors of the. enterprise and stock-
Molders in the concern are Dr. Todd and

which is of modern pattern, and will at
once make an experiment. The iDlant
will be located at present near Lamb's
mill, in order to be handy to steam

points to a success, as brick and tile that

The Fourth day of July, 1889, -dawned?
clear and bright. As the pall of. slight?
lifted from the face of the earth, the rays"
of a bright morning sl« could be seen
rising above the horizon ancl only now
and then a small gray cloud was seen to-
dot a sky of azure hue of dim the glow«
lug rays of a .July sun. The deafening dire
of th.e roaring cannon and festive fire
cracker was sufficient evidence thai;
*vYoui)g America," as well as the older
generation, had arisen with the proverbial lark and commenced early to pluck
an occasional tail feather'from the bircB
of. liberty that they might hear the proud
bird scream. The sound of the saw and?
hammer were heard on all Ride?,' where*
finishing touches were being* given- to
decorations previously commenced, ana
uncompleted Wednesday on account of
the heavy rains.'
The exercises of the day began early.,
At promptly G o'clock the two hose companies and the G-. A. B. Post, followed by
numerous citizens, headed by the officers
of the, day and the E.of P. band, marched
to the union depot,-where alighted from
the sown hound T. & A. train, two hose
companies from Cadillac accompanied by
numerous citizens from that city as welly
as from ^Marion, Lake George, Farwell
and. other points along the line. * The
line of march was resumed and the visitors escorted to the several hotels anil.
restaurants for breakfast. . The early:
morning hours until 0 o'clock were occupied in receiving visitors and friend?,,

Arthur Bendetson will hereafter manage my business in Clare and attend to
the want? of my many customers. During my residence in Chicago I will attend
to the buying; being in the market every
day it will enabl*1 me to procure bargains
that I never could before; thereby the
people of this vicinity will be able to buy
their goods at my store for a great deal
less than they have ever done before.
Thanking-my customers for past favors
and trusting they will extend the same
hearty support to Mr. Bendetson, with
kind wishes to all, I 'remain,

tweenthe '•C.Ii.JS.** club and a picked-.
nine, the Shepherd team failing to appear. The game resulted in favor of the*
liC. i'L S." at a score of 21 to 1.
After dinner, which all were ready for/
preparations were made to entertain the
street game?. The Marshal of the day
made the announcement, and after re
peated attempts to get a crowd together
and find contestants' for the..numerous*
liberal prizes, gave up in disgust, and:
announced the hose contest between the-*
Cadillac and Clare teams. The Cadillac;
made the first run, distance 40 rods, lay-
.ina* 200 feet of 'hope, time 43% seconds.,
The Clare boys covered the ground in a
trifle less time, but lost in making the-
coupling, time.53 seconds. The prize of
$50 was-awarded to Cadillac.
o
At 3 o-clock the crowd again adjottrnecl
to the beautiful-'-grounds ;pf-the Clare
Base Ball Company, where \vas wi finessed an interesting, nine-innfiigs' game
between Evart and. -Clare, for a purse oi
•$25, tbe former winning by a score of {?.'
to 4. The Clare boj-s played a splendid
gamgaf ter tbe first inning, when Evart
secured 5 of their 9 scores. It was the
first time the Clare boys had played or
practiced together this season, and
showed that tl^ey are eapable of playing
a fine game if practiced.
The closing feature of the day, the'display of :fire»works, was?- commenced at
about 8 o'clock, and for more than an
hour the enthusiastic crowd was entertained by a brilliant display, which
gave unbounded satisfaction and delight.
The arrangements were such as to insure
absolute safetv. and the dangerous playthings were in charge of men of experience and sound judgment. Many of the
pieces were marvels of pyrotechnic art
and included many rare'and new de~ •
signs-
There seemed to be but one desire oil
the part of all, and that was to celebnite
and enjoy the 113 anniversary of the declaration of'independence iii a manner
fitting to the occasion; and it was done
in grand style. In general, every tiling
was orderly and few cases of intoxication, or disorderly conduct, were re=
ported. The village was crowded, the
estimated number of visitors is placet])
at upwards of 5.000. The ofiicers of the
day, and the committees who had tho
arrangements in hand deserve much
•credit-.
The crowds from Evart and Cndillao
are a gentlemanly and ladvlike lot of
people and Clare will he proud when she-
can meet the citizens of the two towns iu
joint convention to celebrate the Fourth
of July, or any other occasion of merry
making.
