A petition was circulated about. town
Tuesday which secured a great many;
signers. It asked the common council to
draft an ordinance, or immediately enforce the one now on the record, requiring all mill owners within corporate limits to place a spark-arrester on the smoke
stacks and to be particular al>ont their
proper adjustment, especially during the
dry summer months. It is claimed that

It will probably interest many Clare-
people to learn that Ellensburg, Washington Ty.3 (for which place Rodney
Palmer departed last spring to accept a
.clerkship in the postoffice) was almost
entirely destroyed by fire on the 5th inst.
Two hundred houses were distroyed and-
the space burned over is about 50 acres.
Among the.buildings was the new brick
postoffice. The loss as near as can be
ascertained is $2,000,000. There is not a
restaurant, hotel or boarding house left
and many people are'destitute. The ci ry
contained about 4,000 inhabitants, and
'tis stated that the citizens are determined
to rebuild at one?. The fire exhausted
itself after burning about five hours.
