and when he came the young woman
begged piteously not to be taken
"back to that place." Assured of
protection she became calmer and
told her story which was as follows:
She said she had come to Harrison
about three weeks ago in search of
employment as a servant girl, that
being directed to Carr's- place she J officer successfully resisted all effort
went there and did not learn the
character of the house until after she
arrived. Then she was not permitted to leave, a close watch being
kept upon heiv She was subjected to
Insult and cruelty a long train of
abuses ending on Friday when she
was struck by a miserable attac ^e of
the place and felled to the iioor.
Complaining she was promised a
sound threshing at night but she determined not to wait to receive it.
Hence her flight. Her -appearance
and bearing are ladylike and much
sympathy Is aroused in her case
among the good people of Harrison,
The case will be Investigated„
in that direction. "If you wili take
that star off," said the would-be rescuer to Undei Shersff Mack, "I will
knock the head right off from you."
Mack unpinned the star from his
vest and placed it in his pocket.
Stepping up to his assailant he quietly Invited him to commence his job
of head knocking right away but the
poor fellow" was thoroughly cowed
and at once carried a motion to postpone indefinitely the punishment lie
had promised Mack. This was the
only motion he made. Next day the
girl was ta%en to Midland jail for
safe keeping, as another attempt at
her rescue was suspected.

THE SCHOOLS.
Mr. Doherty reports the following
pupils not absent during February:
Herble Sexsmith, Eddie Sexsmith,
Guy Horning, James Battle, Clarence Van Brunt, Minnie Gardiner,
Bessie Giberson, Lillie Kelly, Edna
Elden, Anna B. Stevens, Jesse Bigley, Frank Mooney, Clarence Trevidick and Geo. Kirkpatrick.
The following pupils in the first-
primary department are reported by
Bliss Mclntyre present every school
day during February: Bell Giberson, Blanch Mooney, Alice Austin,
Floyd Kane, Clarence Halsteod,
Frank Doherty.
In the second primary Mrs. Gorda-
niei" reports the following not absent.

Llewellyn Johnson, *Laura Younglove, Mary Brodie, Horace Kem,

Sic Bi&ritt MacIcibusJ* And then he
sat down and mopped his thf obing
temples with his coat sieve and took.
afresh chew of fine cut to allay the
fever in his aching jaws. The effort
had well nigh exhausted him. Prosecuting Attorney'* Burritt replied to
his argument(?). briefly and the
Judge gave his decision. Now Jud~
kins is young and verdant, you know,
and though overwhelmed by the
brilliant logic of Mr, Green, did not
seem to entertain that respect for the
distinguished jurist's opinions that
he ought to have entertained. He
intimated that the prisoner had been,
let off once with the evident Intention of letting him take leg bail smd
that it looked very much as if this
was another effort in the same direction. He ordered the man taken
back to jail. This took the breath
away from lawyers Green and Can-
field for they had promised- their
man his liberty and all Harrison
knew what they expected to do
when they left for Hersey. . They
felt no doubt much as the editor of
The Pbess felt when that Vernon
jury brought in a verdict of "no
cause of action," and they went back
home sadder and wiser men. So the
matter rests. The eagle's tail feathers have resumed their accustomed
position, the one-eyed goddess stands
serenely watching the balance, and
the Constitution seems to be all
there yet notwithstanding the terrific strain it has undergone. Erin
