The Mt. Pleasant Tribune uses rather plain language in speaking of the
glove light advertised to take place
there last week and says that owing
to the interference ofthe authorities,
the combatants had to put up with
s-0a snide sparring match ■ with soft
gloves, about forty persons being
present."
J, W. Dunlop's new brick block to
be erected on the southwest corner of
Main and Fifth streets, will be 44x75
feel, two stories high, the lower floor
to be made into two stores, Mr.
Dunlop is now contracting for the
material which he hopes to have on
hand ready to commence building
before many weeks.
Samuel McGregor and another
man were convicted of simple larceny by Justice Wing of Vernon, who
fined each of them $5 and costs and
committed them until paid. The
fine not being paid a commitment
was made out and the defendants taken to jail but the Sheriff would not
receive them under that sentence, no
definite time being specified.
Q. W. Smith having filed his official bond and oath of office as Clerk
entered upon the discharge of his duties but it was discovered that the
Clerk's bond had to be approved by
the Township Board. That body
met this week, approved Mr. Smith's
bond and also that of Highway Corn-

The re-election of Marshal James
L. Welch by an unanimous vote of
the Common Council, was a high
compliment to that gentleman whose
administration of Clare's police affairs for so long a period has given
general satisfaction.
Michael Shay, sentenced to 14 days'
imprisonment in the village bastile,
had his sentence commutted this'
week to banishment for life, and he
lost no time in putting distance between himself and the scene of his
troubles.
It is said that Judge Holsington of
Harrison will be taken into full partnership by the great legal combina°
tion and will enter upon the practice
ofthe law upon Ms retirement from
the bench, July 4th. He could assist the rag pedlar in doing the outside work.
Lester VanKoughnett and wife
have dissolved partnership and the
former having had his wife sign a
paper in which she agrees to care for
their little girl, goes back to Canada
to forget his great sorrow. Mr. Van-
sumption. During her residence of
two years in Clare she has gained .a
large circle of friends who sincerely
mourn her death. The afflicted husband and now motherlesss children
have the sympathy of all.
Mrs, Dr. Davis kindly showed us
the other day a novel and beautiful
ornament.- It was a combination of
advertising cards, tastefully arranged on stiff paper, the whole making
a large diamond shaped wall picture,
five feet long and about two and a
half feet wide. It is well worth going to see. Mrs. Edmunds pf Mt.
Pleasant, who is visititing Mrs. Dav

Quite a hostile sentiment is enter-
tainedb y some|persons in Clare and the
surrounding country against a man,
who, it is alleged by thero, manufactured a story and swore to it before
the grand jury, thus aiding in the
procurement of several indictments
for cutting and removing timber.
One of the angered ones was silly
enough the other day to brandish a
revolver and declare publicly that if
he ever caught the fellow (naming
him) in the woods, he would gi^e
him a dose of lead. Fools aren't all
this is his third wife and that she has
left him at least 50 times in the last 30
years. This separation, he says, is
final,

tor Curtiss, greenbacker and former
republican, is certainly not a Grant
man. When the senate passed a resolution of regret and sympathy, a
few days ago, by a risingj vote, ' the
senator sat in his chair, and when
urged to rise by neighboring senators
said he was utoo tired." This morning, when the Bev. Mr. Thompson
opened the senate with prayer and
mentioned the illness of the genera!9
Senator Curtiss rose impatiently from
his desk and went into the cloak
room. The colored janitor said something about Grant, when the senator
said: "I don't want to hear anything about him, I don't admire
him." After the morning session
was adjourned he spoke to Senator
Belknap, saying he could not stand
