Many masks liave been engaged
for the masquerade ball at the Opera

organized and disciplined. Choose
men of force for the position of Chief
Engineer so that directions given at
a firo will be obeyed instantly. The
business men ought to take an interest in this matter.
J. A. Brayman has bought Root's
roller rin.k and will repair the building, so as to make it comfortable for
the winter. The new proprietor has
secured the services of the band, ancl
will have the rink open as heretofore
on Saturday evenings.
The teachers' institute in Clare
next week bids fair to draw together a large number of our local educators. Daily sessions will be held in
the high school rooms and the public are cordially inviled to attend any
of the meetings. Tuition is free.
The conductor, Prof. Putman of
Ypsilanti, will deliver a lecture, Tuesday evening at the Congregational
church on tho subject: "Old Probs,"
or "The Weather Bureau and its
Works." On Wednesday evening
Prof. Pattengill of Lansing will lecture on "A River Ride to tho Cotton Exposition." These lectures arc
free to all and it is hoped tliat the
church will lie crowded on each evening.

Noah Runyan the young man visiting in Sheridan, who last week at-
temped to clean his gun when it was
loaded, will probably have sense
enough not to try it again. He was
frightfully injured, four fingers of one
hand, and two of the other being
blown off. There were several children in the room when the gun and
the fingers went off, but, fortunately,
the little ones were unharmed.
Mt. Pleasant Tribune: "A Clare
shingle manufacturer advertised that
he would not buy stolen shingle bolts
and as a consequence he found it prudent to sell out and move near Mt.
Pleasant, where he can get abundance
of raw shingle material with a photograph of honesty beam ing from every
bolt." The Tribune has' got the two
