The annual village statement ^s
published in these columns, is mi
leading in some particulars.
it it is inferred that the village paid
for the laying of the water works
pipe $50 or $60 more than M. Walker
the contractor was entitled to by the
terms of his contract. The fact is
the amount paid to the workmen
was charged directly to Walker and
he was credited with the .contract
price. The village did not pay the
money twice as has heen argued by
those who knew of the contract and
understood the' statement to mean
just what it said. Walker lost money
on' the job of laying the"$>ipe but the
amount was so smairthat it probably
did not worry him,a great deal. The
loss to the village came iir on some
larger deals, when Walker got in his
fine work as a salesman and .was
more careful of his own interests.

The March number of Lippincott's
Monthly Magazine gives liberal instalments ofthe two serials, which increase in interest as the plot is further
developed. "The One Pioneer of

known episode in modern travel the
story of Thomas Thorold, who in
1876, fell in the hands ofthe savages
of Tierra del Fuego, and after witnessing all the cruelties which they inflicted upon their enemies was allowed to return to civilization in order
that he. might acquaint, the white
man with the horrors, he had seen.
