e are in receipt of a number of
generous communications from
Isabella county, Rev. Mr, Cole's for-
„mer residence, offering us promisory
notes against the reverend gentleman, at a large discount. We thought
we had a good thing at first, as by
buying the paper at a discount and
turning it oyer on the. $5,000 judgment he is to "get against us, we could
save somefching^but the notes were
long since outlawed and we couldn't
use them. We feel grateful to our
friends, however, and sympathise
with them in their misfortune in
holding such worthless paper.
Correspondence of The i*REss.
Harrison, -July 25.
I was careless last week and forgot to mention that Julia-A. Putnam
was arrested on complaint of Lester
Dillenback of Frost for keeping a
houce of ill fame.' Examination was
held July 16, and she -was beid to
bail. On-th^ same day a shooting affair happened at Elm G-roye, wherein Jack Heenan was severely cut
about the neck and shouldars by some
of Lally's Italians. Six Italians were
arrested and brought before Justice
Hoisington. They swore themselves
clear and are again at large. In the
melee one of the. ^doves were shot
through the 1—imb. She still survives and the ranch is in full blast—
The trouble arose over the price of
their drinks, and the question arises,
what business have they to sell liquors without a license? The authorities well know the facts.
On Friday last Mrs. Hagg had A.
Straub arrested for assaulting and
battering heir son ^rpd, aged 9 yoars,
Straub acknowledged the. corn, the
citizens paid his,vtl fine,' and now
Mrs. Hagg's-boyg -will -have to carry
themselves as becomes good youngsters. They are not-tne: only ones,.
Mr. James Finton will ride faster
now as he has exchanged his oxen
for Mr. MickePs four-yoar-old colts.
If Mr. E. Rose, overseer, would fix
that mud hole by -Mr. S. Young's
house, he would receive the thanks
of a great number of people who live
north of it.
Farmers are discouraged' about
their hay as it rains three fourths of
the time,
Samuel McNeal's child next to the
the youngest, died last Faiday near
Atwood's. The funeral was held at
the Crawiord school house Saturday.
Mr. Kemp's horse trade did not
prove profitable to bim as the one he
got died in three or four days.
Mrs. James Saul is some^.better;
also Mrs. W. A. Thompson-;
^Wliatl would Mr, Ovdb if he had a
three years', famine. Oh, yes, \ he
would have enough to last that short
time. Nothing like sympathy for
our fellow man. ,
None Such.
