jimny noon. The
®M has steadily increased. Only one is up from Clare, ■
and none from Fa-rweii. Profs. Pa-t-
tengill and Crombie are Jive workers
and those teachers who do not improve the splendid opportunities now
offered them for normal instruction
will be the losers. AU teachers in attendance have been provided with
board free* and I understand'that the
local committee made special efforts
to secure places for teachers, so that
their expenses would not be .burdensome, while getting the needful
training which the institute offers.—
Prof. Crombie lectured0 on Mondry
evening at Sear?s Hall oa the subject: "Our-Public Schools." The
lecture was a good one and well received. Prof. Pattengili speaks this
evening. So far the institute is a
success.

Thinks it a JTailnre.
On the branch running north east
from Atwood's station one day recently a loaded car started" off by itself toward the junetiogi and was
under such headway before it was
discovered that the men could not
catch it. Away the car went, going
faster and faster, until'it attained a
speed of 25 or 30 miles per hour. At
Atwood's the switch was set for the
main line, but the car, strange to relate, was not ditched when it struck
the switch but jumped squarely onto
the main track and continued, pell
meli, on its course. Fortunately the
army of youngsters that ^are usually
all over in the way at Hatton, were
just then out of sight, and the car
passed the station without doing any
damage. Mr. Soulby happened to
be working near Moore's crossing,
and seeing the car coming graveled
the track and stopped it, but for
which wise action, the Junction house
would doubtless have been knocked
over into Vernon township. How
the runaway ear . managed to jump
the switch at Hattan and keep from
breaking even a bolt or losing a log
is considered almost a miracle.
